Minor within the electives - Faculty of Social Sciences

Ask permission for your elective space
Last updated on 19 April 2023
Students of the Faculty of Social Sciences can take a minor: a programme on one subject.

The first semester of the third bachelor year is the electives. The electives have a study load of 30 EC.

You can fill in your elective space with (a combination of):

Do you want to delve into a specific field? Choose a minor! Follow a 30 credits programme with fixed courses on one subject. This can be within the Faculty of Social Sciences, at another VU Amsterdam faculty or at another university.

All students who are going to fill in their elective space must meet the requirement that at least 12 ECTS are courses of “level 300” (advanced level).

Note: There are requirements associated with the content of your elective space and in some cases approval by the Examination Board is required.

You can fill in your elective space without permission from the Examination Board with an FSW-minor or VU university minor. For other minors you must first request permission from the Examination Board.

Please note: You need to register and deregister for courses during the registration period using the registration module. For information on the (deviant) registration procedure per course, please consult the Study Guide. More information on registering can be found on VU.nl.

Minors at Faculty of Social Sciences

A faculty minor falls within the field of study of your own faculty. Depending on your choice, you can broaden or deepen your knowledge in a different field of study or a specific theme. You do not need to request permission from the Examination Board for a FSW minor.

If a certain course from the faculty minor is already part of your regular courses, you will not be able to (completely) follow this minor as courses cannot be counted twice. In that case, ask the Examination Board for permission to fill your elective space.

University minors VU

It is possible to choose from a number of VU Amsterdam minors, which are open to all VU Amsterdam students: see this page. You do not need to request permission from the Examination Board for a university minor.

Minors from other VU Amsterdam faculties

It is also possible to take a faculty minor at another VU Amsterdam faculty. Take a good look at the entry requirements of the different minors. Not all faculty minors are accessible to Faculty of Social Sciences students.

For a minor from another faculty, you must request permission from the Examination Board to be allowed to use it to fill in your elective space.

Minors from other universities

If you would like to take a minor at a university other than VU Amsterdam, check the website of the relevant university for more information.

For a minor from another university, you must request permission from the Examination Board of your own study programme. More information can be found under approval electives
