Not a VU Amsterdam student - Minor registration
Want to follow a minor at VU Amsterdam?
You can choose from more than 110 minors
If you're not a VU Amsterdam student and want to follow a minor at VU Amsterdam, then you should apply as a secondary course student. You can then enrol for one or multiple courses at VU Amsterdam. You do not need to apply through Studielink (as for complete study programmes). See the step-by-step guide down below on how to apply.
Please note: You need to be a student at another Dutch educational institution in order to follow secondary subjects at VU Amsterdam. You can contact the Student Desk for questions about your application.
Are you an Exchange student or Semester in Amsterdam student? Then the International Office is responsible for course approval and registration. Please contact either the Incoming Exchange Team or Semester in Amsterdam Team for details.
Make sure that you complete your application for the courses on time!

Step-by-step guide to registering for a minor
Step 1: check the admission requirements
- Please check the admission requirements of the minor you wish to apply for.
- Please also check the page of the relevant faculty in order to see if there are any additional faculty regulations. Some faculties may have an application deadline.
- The starting date of a minor can be found in the online Study guide.
Step 2: register
- Go to https://vu.nl/en/register and select Registration for secondary subjects. Select the correct academic year.
- Insert your personal details. After this you will receive your login details for vu.nl through email.
Step 3: complete your application
- Go to the Application module and select the button Complete application.
- Complete your registration by going through the form and submitting the entire registration.
- Choose the minor you wish to follow. Upload all of the requested documents there, in this case a grade transcript.
Your request will be sent digitally to the faculty after your application has been completed. If you qualify, the faculty will grant you permission to follow the minor. You can check the status of your registration in the status overview in Complete registration.
Step 4: hand in a valid proof of payment (BBC)
To definitively enroll at VU Amsterdam you must hand in a proof of payment (known in Dutch as Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld or BBC). If you have already paid tuition fees at another Dutch educational institution, you can request a Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld at that institution, addressed to VU Amsterdam. The other institution will digitally send the BBC to VU Amsterdam. Do this as soon as possible before the registration deadline of your courses, so that you can register for your approved subjects in time.
Step 5: check your email for confirmation
Check whether you receive a confirmation of your registration through email. There may be more students interested than places available. Please note that your enrolment request will only be processed after all the documents are received and after approval is given by the faculty.
Step 6: register for the approved subjects
Once you are officially enrolled, you can use the registration module to register for your approved subjects. At VU, students sign up for their courses per period. You will receive a reminder when a new sign-up period starts.
UvA students at FNWI
If you are an UvA student at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathemathics and Informatics (FNWI) and are taking courses at VU Amsterdam (Faculty of Science) within the context of the joint degree programmes, then you will be automatically enrolled at VU as a secondary course student after your enrolment at UvA is complete. This also applies to VU students the other way around.
Your enrolment must be completed on 31 August. If this is not the case, then you must arrange being enrolled as a secondary course student yourself (see the step-by-step guide above). More information on enrolment and re-enrolment for the joint degree programmes can be found on the website of the Faculty of Science.
