Minors at VU Amsterdam

View our minors offer!
Last updated on 17 March 2025
In the first semester of the third study year of your bachelor's degree, you can follow a minor in your elective space.

A minor is a fixed selection of courses around a specific subject, allowing you to broaden or deepen your study programme. You can also opt for a minor outside your study programme or even at another university. Non-VU Amsterdam students can also take minors at VU Amsterdam. In the Teaching and Examination Regulations (TER) you can find which minors are accessible for your study programme. Make sure to check the minor overview in the Study Guide as well to see the specific entry requirements per minor.

As a VU Amsterdam student you can choose between minors approved beforehand or minors not approved beforehand. For minors approved beforehand you can directly register for courses. For minors not approved beforehand you need to request permission from your Examination Board in order to take the minor. Read the application procedures below to find more information about how to follow a minor.

You can also fill your elective space with something other than a minor. No idea which minor you want to take or how you want to fill in your elective space? Get advice from your academic advisor

Minor application procedures

  • Application procedure for VU students

Minors offered within your study programme (approved beforehand)

These are university and faculty minors that are directly accessible from your study programme, without you having to request permission from the Examination Board. You can find which minors these are in the TER of your programme via the Study Guide . They are also visible in the registration module under the tab ‘minor/specialisation’. Select the desired minor and then go to the tab ‘preselected courses’. Register for the corresponding courses within the registration deadlines.

Minors or courses at VU Amsterdam outside of your own study programme (not approved beforehand)

These are minors that are not offered within your own programme and are therefore not visible in your registration module. You can only take these courses extracurricular, which means that they do not count towards your degree unless you have received prior permission from the Examination Board. In the OER of your programme, see the Study Guide, you will find the rules for your programme regarding following extracurricular courses. Visit the page on Extracurricular courses for more information and an explanation on how to request permission to follow these courses as a part of your programme.

Do you want to follow a minor at another university?

Then check the website of the relevant university for more information. You also need to request permission from the Examination Board. The Examination Board has a response time of 30 working days. Keep this in mind and request your permission well in advance.

  • Application procedure for non-VU students

Student from other Dutch higher educational institutions?

You can follow courses or a minor at VU Amsterdam as a secondary subject student. Use the filter 'secondary subject' in the Study Guide to see which courses are available to you. Make sure you meet the admission requirements of the chosen courses and/or minor and complete your application in time.

Are you not enrolled at a Dutch educational institution?

In some cases you can take courses at VU Amsterdam as a contract education student.

Are you an Exchange student or Semester in Amsterdam student?

The International Office is responsible for the approval and enrolment of courses. For more information, contact the Incoming Exchange Team or Semester in Amsterdam Team.

Minors per faculty

The terms and conditions for minors may differ per faculty. Check with the faculty of your bachelor's programme which requirements your minor must meet.

  • ACTA

The Faculty of Dentistry (ACTA) does not offer any minors.

  • BETA

  • FBMS

Minors of the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences (FBMS)

For minors of the bachelor's programmes Pedagogical Sciences, Movement Sciences and Psychology you do not need to request permission from the Examination Board.

  • HUM

Minors of the Faculty of Humanities (HUM)

In a minor, you follow a set program of courses of 30 credits. If you did not pass one or more courses of your minor and you want the minor's endorsement on your diploma supplement, you can choose to resit the course the following academic year. You can also choose to fill in missed credits with elective courses (for example, in period 4, 5 and/or 6). You will then not receive the endorsement 'minor' on your diploma supplement. Ask your Examination Board for permission in advance to include these electives in your program.

If a course from a minor is already part of your regular courses, you cannot take this minor (in full), because courses cannot be counted twice. In that case, ask permission from the Examination Board to complete your elective space.

Note: For courses taken in the elective space, the requirement is that a minimum of 12 EC must be at “level 300” (advanced level). Language and educational minors are excluded from the rule that they must consist of at least two courses at level 300.

  • FRT

Minors of the Faculty of Religion and Theology (FRT)

  • FSS

Minors of the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS)

When you choose for a minor, you follow a 30 credits programme with fixed courses on one subject. This can be within the Faculty of Social Sciences, at another VU Amsterdam faculty or at another university.

All students who are going to fill in their elective space must meet the requirement that at least 12 ECTS are courses of “level 300” (advanced level).

If a certain course from the faculty minor is already part of your regular courses, you will not be able to (completely) follow this minor as courses cannot be counted twice. In that case, ask the Examination Board for permission to fill your elective space.

You can fill in your elective space without permission from the Examination Board with a FSW-minor (if none of the courses of the minor are part of your regular courses) or university minor. For other minors you must first request permission from the Examination Board.

  • MED

Minors of the Faculty of Medicine (MED)

The minors of the bachelor's programme of Medicine focus on medical scientific deepening and broadening and the translational connection between research and clinic. The aim is to strengthen academic and scientific education within the clinical context. As a result, you will be better prepared for current developments in healthcare. In light of internationalisation and the reinforcement of academic training, the minors are taught in English. Please mind that in some minors certain components (e.g. patient presentations) will be taught in Dutch.

The minors Challenges in Women's & Child Healthcare, Clinical & Scientific Internal Medicine, Comprehensive Care and Anatomy and Global Health Indonesia are only open to Medicine students of VU Amsterdam.

The minors at the Faculty of Medicine start in September, last 16 weeks and comprise a total of 24 EC. Teaching is small-scale and consists of interactive tutorials of +/- 25-48 students, study groups of approximately 12 students, practicals and working visits. Each minor is multidisciplinary in scope. You can complete your minor in January with a literature essay (6 EC) to make it 30 EC.

For more information see the web page International Minors in Medicine (electives/exchange).
