At VU Amsterdam, you develop A Broader Mind. In every study you will be challenged to take a broader view of your academic discipline, of society and yourself. Take the course and help make a difference.

The Broader Mind Course is an extracurricular, interdisciplinary course which focuses on your personal development and involvement with societal issues like success & failure, poverty and sustainability. In a mixed group of students from all VU faculties, you will be involved in an innovative course that will challenge your perspective on different topics. The course runs from February till June in the year 2024 (P4 + P5); registration opens from December 11 2023.

Last years’ students share their 9 reasons to follow the Broader Mind Course in this video.

An overview of practical details and themes of Broader Mind Course can be found in the flyer.

We will make sure you are well-prepared by providing you with training and coaching both prior to and during the Broader Mind Course. So, you will also learn quite a bit!

As a student guide, you will receive a volunteer's allowance.

A great opportunity

“You don't often get the opportunity to talk about social issues with people from other disciplines. It was a great opportunity to listen to others, to think about challenging issues and to try to find solutions to them.”

- Diana Lucía Gross, Social Psychology student
