There are contemporary teaching spaces and study, work and meeting areas, such as the Global Room for international staff and students. The University Library, some faculties and the central restaurant are housed in the Main Building. Every day, 6,000 visitors walk through the central hall.
The building was designed by architect Chr. Nielsen and is 90,000 m2.
Polder roof
The Zuidas is largely 'paved' due to intensive building development, which means the sewer system can no longer always cope with the discharge of rainwater during heavy rainfall. Water storage on flat roofs helps to buffer water during these downpours. The building features a ‘polder roof’, a Dutch innovation that stores and controls rainwater on the roof. The New University Building also has a 'polder roof' to buffer water.
