Lean as a Strategy to Operational Excellence

Lean/Operational Excellence

Continuous improvement is of paramount importance for every organization. How do we deliver (the right and more) value to the customer with higher quality, in less time and at a lower cost? Operational Excellence is required, but how do we achieve it? Lean as a business strategy can be a very effective way to accomplish this.

In today’s volatilite, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world, organizations wanting to improve their operations face significant challenges. Improvements need to be done from three perspectives:
Customer: how can we deliver more value at a higher quality, in a shorter time and at a lower cost (economic, ecological and social), thereby ensuring that customers retain their products and services?
Shareholder/Stakeholder: how can we guarantee a financially healthy organization with enough profit to keep investing in the future? (For not-for-profit organizations: how can we maximize effectiveness, even as budgets decrease?)
Employee: how can we improve well-being by increasing engagement, motivation and use of creativity to ensure that the organization provides an attractive work environment with meaningful work so it can attract and retain capable employees?
Lean, a synonym for the ‘Toyota Production System’ (TPS), is a business strategy for operational excellence that addresses all three perspectives.

The essence of the Lean/Operational Excellence course:

  • Start date: 3 October 2024
  • Duration: 3 days
  • Dates:
    • Thursday 3 October & friday 4 October. Both days from 09:00 to 17:30.
    • Day 3 (report presentation) will be scheduled after the course starts.
  • Format: Physical lectures at the VU
  • Costs: €1780

This course answers the following questions:

"Why...

....is Lean/OpEx more than just eliminating waste?

... is Lean/OpEx more than a toolbox for process improvement?

... do we make decisions in Lean/OpEx that are fundamentally different from traditional operations management and process improvement?

... don’t true Lean objectives exist?

... can Lean/OpEx be used in all environments, not just manufacturing or the automotive industry?

... doesn’t Lean/OpEx work with a 'cut-copy-paste' approach to best practices?

... is Lean/OpEx not just something for "operations" but rather a strategic decision at the executive level?

... is it difficult to sustain Lean/OpEx in many organizations, and what are the typical reasons for this failure?

This course will encourage you to apply what you’ve learned to your own work environment.
