Taking a multidisciplinary approach to improve your practice

The programme takes a corporate perspective on corporate restructuring: all phases from awareness to final restructuring results are reviewed. Special attention will be given to necessary skills that increase your effectiveness during turnarounds, such as crisis management, stakeholder management and negotiation.

The programme is designed to cover the various aspects involved with the restructuring of distressed companies. The outline of the programme follows the restructuring process and can be divided into the following parts:

  • Basic concepts: understanding the causes and symptoms of distress and primers in finance (e.g. valuation and debt capacity analyses), legal (e.g. principles of bankruptcy law) and operations (e.g. stakeholder management, negotiation and leadership).
  • Operational: turnaround management from managing the early days of the crisis to implementing a turnaround plan.
  • Financial: managing and negotiating with creditors to reach an agreement on a financial restructuring.
  • Legal: understand the legal framework of the restructuring process and negotiate composition plans out-of-court as well as in-court.

The application of acquired knowledge and skills through case studies and guest lectures on industry best practices forms an important part of the curriculum.

Further professionalisation in corporate restructuring

The introduction of the WHOA regulation in January 2021 in the Netherlands triggered a drive among corporate restructuring professionals to further enhance the level of professionalism in their business. This professionalisation of the sector is one of the main goals of the new Dutch Restructuring Association (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Herstructurering). In close collaboration with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, this new executive programme was designed by member professionals and academics in the Netherlands and abroad.

Focus areas are crisis management, stakeholder management, understanding stakeholders’ positions and legal options, and managing the restructuring and negotiation process. It considers out-of-court as well as in-court restructuring, including restructuring processes under the new WHOA regulation. As part of the programme, you will understand the perspective of major players such as bankers, distressed debt and equity investors, company CEOs and CFOs, and their advisors. You also develop insights into important turnaround topics such as legal proceedings, valuation and debt capacity analysis.

Lectures are held by a balanced mix of top speakers from the Netherlands and abroad.
