Dutch for expats

Are you working in the Netherlands (temporarily or otherwise) and would you like to learn Dutch? Welcome to VU-NT2! There are several opportunities to start a Dutch language group course at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with its lively campus neighbouring the Zuidas business district. VU-NT2 also organizes tailor-made training and in-company courses for companies and organizations with international employees.

About the language courses

  • You will learn the language skills you need to enjoy living in the Netherlands and achieve success in your work. 
  • The focus will be on improving your spoken Dutch under the expert guidance of highly skilled and experienced teachers. 
  • Our group courses also introduce you to the culture and traditions of Dutch society and give you the opportunity to expand your network by meeting people of different nationalities and backgrounds. 
  • You can join at any level and you are free to determine which level you want to achieve, from beginner to higher levels of proficiency (A1 up to C1). 
  • Each group course starts several times per year. Personalized courses start whenever you are ready.

  • In-company and tailormade

    VU-NT2 organizes tailor-made training at VU Amsterdam as well as in-company courses for companies and organizations with international employees. We offer a variety of in-company programmes that are suitable for all levels, from beginner to higher level proficiency, and for groups from 5 to 25 participants.

    All our group courses can be given as in-company courses. Also, if the standard course programme does not entirely fit your wishes and demands, we will offer you a customized course that will match the ambitions and current proficiency of the course participants.

  • Evening group course: Dutch for work and study (SPRINT)

    Our evening group course, Dutch for work and study, will give you a good command of the basics after only two modules of 8 weeks (A2). On completion of six modules, you will be able to understand difficult texts, speak Dutch fluently and correctly, express your opinion and participate in discussions. Classes are scheduled twice a week and require 5-7 hours of self-study.

    If your first language is German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic or Afrikaans, you might also choose to take the fast track of this course, which will enable you to reach level B2 within just 7 months: Dutch for work and study SPRINT.

  • Evening group course: Professional Dutch

    If you already have a good command of the Dutch language (B2/B2+) but would like to improve your language skills for the purpose of career advancement, our Professional Dutch group course may suit you best. In this 16-week (one class per week) evening course you will be expected to write formal letters, essays or theses, or even give a presentation.

  • Saturday group course: Everyday Dutch

    Would you like to learn Dutch to help you in your daily activities? Why not join our group course Everyday Dutch? Two modules of 8 weeks will teach you the basics (A2), including all of the useful words and turns of phrase you need in everyday life in the Netherlands. You will be required to do 7-10 hours of self-study per week, supported by 8 classes per module on Saturday mornings.

  • Daytime group course: Dutch for the NT2 State Exam II

    The pace of this course is fast, with 3-4 lessons and 12-15 hours of self-study per week. The daytime group course, Dutch for the NT2 State Exam II, will bring your Dutch to B2 level in one calendar year. This means you will be able to understand difficult texts on a variety of topics, speak Dutch fluently and correctly, express your opinion and participate in discussions.
