The area development of Kenniskwartier is in line with VU Amsterdam's ambitions to work towards a sustainable and livable world in addition to scientific education and research. This renewal process started in 2007 and will continue beyond 2040.

Innovative and entrepreneurial
As an international community, we work together with knowledge partners, social organizations and business on groundbreaking research with social impact. This requires modern facilities such as high-quality laboratories and new buildings. The O|2 Lab Building, the New University Building and the VU Research Building are now in use.

Sustainable and green
An important starting point for the management and further development of the campus are our sustainability goals in the areas of energy, water, green and recycling. These are our sustainability focal points in shaping our future campus.
Vibrant part of the city
With facilities such as theater, cinema, catering, art and a sports center, the campus is truly part of the city. The campus square is a welcoming and green city park for employees, students and the neighbourhood.
Sports, exercise and health
There is also a focus on sports, exercise and health. For research and education in that area, among other things, a knowledge and expertise center is being considered, in cooperation with other knowledge institutions. There are sports facilities on campus for employees, students and local residents.
Phased redeveloping
The renewal process began in 2007 and continues beyond 2040. Meanwhile, the O|2 Lab Building, the New University Building and the VU Research Building are already in use. The W&N building on the VU Campus will be largely demolished starting in 2025. The building no longer meets contemporary requirements for sustainable housing of high-quality education and research. This will follow a phased process. This work will take approximately four years. The work is expected to be completed in 2028.
VU Amsterdam is organizing several walk-in meetings for local residents to inform the neighborhood about the process. The next walk-in meeting is scheduled for January 21, 2025.
