Deepen your skills to tackle the economic challenges of tomorrow

Make an impact with Economics

The Master’s in Economics at VU Amsterdam requires all incoming students to have a strong academic background in economics. This ensures a common foundation that allows our advanced courses to hit the ground running and focus on concepts and tools that go beyond what you have studied in your bachelor’s. You will interact with peers with the same basis, and together you will take your training to the next level.

In practical terms, we expect you to have completed courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics at the intermediate level, and possess a solid background in mathematics for economists.

If you have not completed coursework at the required level, then we recommend that you have a look at our Master's in Spatial and Applied Economics, which is designed to be accessible for students that have completed a bachelor in another field than economics.

Check below for the detailed admission requirements of the Master's in Economics, based on the type of your bachelor’s degree.

  • I have a Dutch higher vocational education (HBO) bachelor’s degree

If you hold an HBO bachelor’s degree, you must first complete a transfer programme to bridge the gap to the WO level. The Master’s in Economics requires a solid academic foundation in economics, so this transfer programme is quite extensive, amounting to 42 ECTS and is typically completed over two years. If you prefer a shorter transfer route that can be finished within one year, you may want to consider the Master’s in Spatial and Applied Economics.

    The transfer programme consists of

    1. Minimum GRE score (VR 152, QR 160, AW 3.5)
    2. Courses in 1st year:
      • Quantitative Research Methods II (E_EBE2_QRM2, Period 1)
      • Microeconomics I (E_EBE1_MICEC, Period 2)
      • Macroeconomics I (E_EBE1_MACEC, Period 4)
    3. Courses in 2nd year:
      • Quantitative Research Methods II (E_EBE2_QRM2, Period 1)
      • Macroeconomics II (E_EBE2_MACEC, Period 4)
      • Microeconomics II (E_EBE2_MICEC, Period 2)
      • Quantitative Research Methods III -  Economics and Finance (E_EBE3_QRMEF, Period 4)
