Language proficiency requirements for Master's degrees

If you are applying for one of our English-taught Master's degree programmes you will have to demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency.

Students applying for an English-taught Master's programme must submit proof that they meet the language requirements. You can meet the requirements either 1) automatically (based on your previous English-taught education), 2) by successfully completing an officially accepted language test or 3) by being granted a formal exemption.

Although complete applications are preferred, you can begin your programme application before you meet the English Language Proficiency requirements.

Requirements, deadlines and exemptions

  • English-taught education

You are exempt from having to take an English Language test if you have completed:

    • A secondary or higher education fully taught in English within Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK or USA.
    • A higher education fully taught in English within Singapore or South Africa
    • A Bachelor's or Master's degree fully taught in English within the EU/EFTA
    • An International Baccalaureate Diploma (English-taught)
    • A Dutch pre-university VWO diploma (including VWO English language and literature) or an international equivalent. See this website for more information about the international equivalents of a Dutch pre-university VWO diploma.

If it is clearly stated on a diploma/transcript that your degree was fully English-taught this will be sufficient proof. Else, we request an official statement with stamp and signature from your previous university.

  • English Language tests - Master's programmes without specific language proficiency requirements

Please find the accepted tests and scores below. In general, the minimum test scores for admission to most (not all) Master's programme at VU Amsterdam are:

    • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall - Most programmes do not accept subscores dropping below 6.0.
Note: the IELTS Online Academic, the online IELTS Indicator and the IELTS One Skill Retake tests are not accepted.
    • TOEFL Internet-based test: 92.
Note: the TOEFL Essentials, the TOEFL iBT Home Edition and MyBestScore tests are not accepted.
    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)/C2 Proficiency: minimum score 180
    • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)/C1 Advanced: minimum score 180
If you have completed a Cambridge test, you have to share your results digitally through the Cambridge system. You can find more information on how to share your results with this step by step guide.
    • VU-test English-language proficiency: TOEFL ITP: 580. This test is offered by the VU Taalloket and takes place at the university. The test costs EUR 100 and is only valid for admission to VU Amsterdam. The TOEFL ITP is not accepted for students who require a study visa/residence permit to study at VU Amsterdam. Please note that the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Religion and Theology also do not accept the TOEFL ITP test.
  • English Language tests - Master's programmes with higher language proficiency requirements

Please click here for an overview of Master's programmes with higher language proficiency requirements. If the Master’s programme you are applying for is not listed in the overview, please refer to the standard English language proficiency requirements.

  • Deadlines

Please do not wait until the last moment to book a test, as test centres can be full and it can take several weeks before you receive your result. We recommend students to hand in their English Language test well before the final deadline.

    Recommended deadline for submission:

    • 1 May - for students who require a study visa/residence permit
    • 1 August - for students with the EU/EFTA nationality and other students who do not require a study visa/residence permit

    Final deadline for submission:

    • 1 June - for students who require a study visa/residence permit
    • 31 August - for students with the EU/EFTA nationality and other students who do not require a study visa/residence permit
  • Test validity

TOEFL and IELTS tests must have been completed no more than two years before 1 September of the year in which your course starts (or 1 February if your programme offers a February intake).

  • How to share your English test results

    • For IELTS or TOEFL test results, please upload your results in the application section of your VU Dashboard.
    • For verification of TOEFL tests please add our institution code before sending the report: 7947 and also upload your results in your VU dashboard.
    • For an online verification of your Cambridge test result please share your results with us through the Candidate Results Online website and also upload your results in your VU dashboard.

In general, we do not need to receive the hard copy test results via postal mail if you share your results digitally.

  • Formal Exemption

If you currently do not meet the English language requirements and have serious reasons to believe you should be exempted from taking another official accepted English Language test, you will need to file an official exemption request. The formal exemption request can be submitted only after conditional admission. You can request this by mailing the International Student Advisor of your faculty. In the request, motivate strongly why you think you are eligible for a formal exemption; also include the English test result and all supplementary documentation.

    Points of note:
    • Students can only request a formal exemption if they already took an accepted test resulting in insufficient scores at least once. The test should still be valid.
    • Please provide one pdf-document as an attachment to your email request. This pdf needs to include the written exemption request, the English test result and all relevant supporting documentation.
    • Exemption requests are only valid per programme application, as they are individually submitted to each admission board.
    • If you have taken multiple English language tests, and on each of these tests you do not meet the required scores for different components, this on its own will not be considered as sufficient basis to receive an exemption.
    • Personal statements of a teacher or colleague are not accepted.
    • It is the student’s own responsibility to arrange a timely exemption request. Submitting a request after the provided deadlines, or submitting a request without sufficient supplementary documentation might result in your exemption request not being considered.
    • There is no guarantee that you will be exempted from the English Language requirements. If that is the case you will still have to submit an accepted English Language test.

*Supplementary documentation includes, but is not limited to:

    • Transcripts showing that the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree you completed in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, Singapore, South Africa or EU/EFTA was mostly taught in English
    • Work or internship experience at an academic level (for example five months in the two years before the start of the programme ) in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK or USA. Documentation should include a signed statement from your (former) employer stating your name, position, work duration and main tasks.
    • Proof of completing a course that has improved your academic English skills. We are not able to advise you on which course might be sufficient to be granted an exemption.
    Deadlines

Exemption requests need to be submitted by the deadlines mentioned below, to allow the Admissions Board sufficient time to review your request.

    • 1 May - for students that require the visa procedure to study at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
    • 31 July - for students with the EU/EFTA nationality and other students who do not require a study visa/residence permit

Exemption request will have to be assessed by the admission board, and as such can take 4-6 weeks to process.
