From dispute to dialogue: building bridges with language

Are you interested in exploring the challenges faced by healthcare communicators, mastering the power of language, and using it to improve communication in health and other societal contexts?

Then the Master’s in Communication and Information Studies: Dialogue, Health and Society is the programme for you.

  • Application procedure for Dutch university level (WO) bachelor’s degree holders (VU bachelor's degree, VU pre-master's or bachelor's degree at another university)

    Educational background requirements

    You can apply to this track if you have a bachelor’s degrees in a range of subjects including Communication and Information Studies, Communication Science, Linguistics, Sociology, Psychology, Medicine or Health Sciences.

    The master’s also requires basic knowledge of Interaction Analysis (for example Conversation Analysis, Ethnomethodology or Discursive Psychology). If you do not have this pre-requisite knowledge, we offer a tailor-made pre-master’s course on Interaction Analysis that will provide you with key knowledge and skills for analysing language and social interaction. The course should be completed before August 15th. This course can be taken online, all year round, at your own pace. Completing this course will take at least a few weeks, so make sure to apply as early as possible.

    When reviewing your application, the Faculty’s Admission Board will check whether you meet the admissions requirements and, if necessary, will recommend that you follow the course Interaction Analysis.

    English language requirements

    As this master’s is taught in English, you are required to demonstrate your proficiency of English by providing official language test results. The qualification or test results must have been awarded no more than two years prior to the proposed date of enrolment in the master’s track.

    You can start the online application process before you have the test results. If you did not already take a language test before applying for the master’s, we advise you to sign up for a test as soon as possible.

    • (Academic) IELTS: 7.0, with a minimum of 6.5 on each item;

    Note: the IELTS Online Academic and the online IELTS Indicator tests are not accepted.

    • TOEFL paper based test: 600, with a minimum of 55 on each component and 4.0 in TWE;

    Note: TOEFL ITP tests are accepted

    • TOEFL internet based test: 100, with a minimum of 22 on each component.

    Note: TOEFL Essentials and TOEFL iBT Home Edition are not accepted. MyBestScore is also not accepted.

    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or a Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) with a score of A, B, C.

    The TOEFL ITP will not be accepted

    You are exempt from the above language requirements if you:

    • Completed an English-taught secondary or higher education degree in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia;
    • Have earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree in an accredited English-taught programme in another member state of the EU/EEA;

    Application process

    The application deadline is 1 June.

    Step 1

    When you start the application process, first, review the admissions criteria to ensure you are eligible for this master’s track. Next, familiarise yourself with the online application procedure. On this page, you can find information about the documents required for the application.

    Step 2

    Follow the online application procedure to apply for the track.

    Very important: on the application portal Studielink.nl, this master’s track falls under the label ‘Communicatie- en Informatiewetenschappen’. Take a look at this document on how to apply for Dialogue, Health and Society to complete your application on Studielink.nl.

    Step 3

    Within a couple of days of applying for the master’s on Studielink.nl, you will receive an email with your login details for VU.nl (VU studentportal). Please complete your application here. Don't forget to fill in your specialization: Dialogue, Health and Society.

    During this step you will be asked to upload an Application File. Please download the correct file from this page. In this file you can see which documents are required to apply for your programme.

    Very important: students of the Faculty of Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam do NOT need to upload the application file.

    Step 4

    Your application will be reviewed by the Admission Board. Once a decision has been reached, you will be informed about whether you’ve been admitted to the Dialogue, Health and Society master’s track. At this point, you might be advised to sign up to the online course in Interaction Analysis (see Educational background requirements above).

    Step 5

    Make sure to finalise your registration as soon as possible and certainly before the start of the track. Here you will find an explanation of what to do after you are admitted. When all of the conditions are met, you will be ready to start your programme at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam!

  • Application procedure for Dutch higher vocational education (HBO) bachelor’s degree holders

    Educational background requirements

    You can apply to this track if you have a degree in a range of subjects, including communication, language or linguistics, social sciences or health.

    When you apply with a degree from a Dutch university of applied sciences (HBO), the Faculty’s Admission Board will carefully review your background education and then, if you are admissible to the pre-master’s track, they will recommend a tailor-made package of pre-master’s courses.

    English language requirements

    As this master’s is taught in English, you are required to demonstrate your proficiency of English by providing official language test results. The qualification or test results must have been awarded no more than two years prior to the proposed date of enrolment in the master’s track.

    You can start the online application process before you have the test results. If you did not already take a language test before applying for the master’s, we advise you to sign up for a test as soon as possible.

    • have earned a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an accredited English-taught programme in another member state of the European Union, or
    • have a Dutch VWO diploma, or
    • have obtained a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or a Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) with a score of A, B or C
    • have earned a VWO diploma or equivalent diploma in which English of a comparable level is required

You can have a bachelor’s degree in a range of subjects, including Communication and Information Studies, Communication Science, Linguistics, Sociology, Psychology, Medicine or Health Sciences.

    The master’s also requires basic knowledge of Interaction Analysis (for example Conversation Analysis, Ethnomethodology or Discursive Psychology).     Application process

    Very important: for this track, all documents should be provided in English, in one PDF file, using this template. You will therefore need scans of your original documents (for example bachelor’s degree).

    Application fees and deadlines

    • 1 April for non-EU/EEA students
    • 1 June for non-Dutch EU/EEA students
    • 1 June for holders of a Dutch Bachelor’s degree (with a Dutch or EU/EEA nationality)

    All students seeking admission to an international bachelor’s or master’s track with an international degree are required to pay a non-refundable €100 application fee. Only after you have paid this fee will we be able to start the evaluation of your application file. If you are applying for more than one track, you will only need to pay the application fee once. Your application fee payment is valid for two years.

    Once you have completed the application, an international student advisor will contact you via email.

    Step 3

    The Admission Board will review your application as soon as it is complete. Normally this takes between four and six weeks, but it might take longer in busy periods, so make sure to apply as soon as possible. If you are admitted to the track, you will receive a letter of conditional admission by email. At this point, you might be advised to sign up to the online course in Interaction Analysis (see Educational background requirements above).
