Artificial intelligence (AI) is now inextricably connected to our lives: from virtual assistants on smartphones to self-driving cars to chatbots like ChatGPT. One thing is certain: AI is fundamentally changing our lives. For example, AI can enable faster and more accurate medical diagnoses, help sort different waste streams, and even support education. However, these increasingly intelligent systems are not without their risks. Deepfakes generated by AI, fake news, and discriminatory or exclusionary algorithms can disrupt our society. The importance of the ethical use of AI cannot be underestimated.
At VU Amsterdam, we conduct leading research in the fields of Humane AI and Hybrid AI, based on the idea that human and machine intelligence complement each other perfectly. We lead the largest AI research consortium on hybrid intelligence. Our AI students learn everything about artificial intelligence and its ethical applications, while we ensure all VU Amsterdam students are equipped to deal with generative AI. Through the VU Centre for Teaching and Learning, we also support our teachers in applying AI in education. In short, the VU Amsterdam community is advancing AI innovation, but always in a socially responsible way.
Together, we’re working towards an innovative society, with a hopeful future. For the sake of a fairer world for the generations of today and tomorrow.
