Last updated on 26 August 2026

Do you need a facility on campus because of a disability?

On the grounds and in the buildings of VU Amsterdam there are facilities for students, staff and visitors with disabilities. In all buildings there are guest persons who can show you the way. There are facilities that are available as standard and facilities for which you, as a student, need an allocation.

Standard available facilities on campus:

Standard available facilities are loop systems in lecture and event halls, adapted toilets and at least one wheelchair-accessible entrance per building.

Facilities requiring allocation through your student advisor

  • Lift pass

There are lifts in all VU buildings but not all lifts stop on every floor or can be used by students. Does your disability require you to use the lift? If so, contact your study advisor. It is possible to get authorisation on your VU pass so that you can use the lift needed for you. A lift pass is possible for every single building of VU Amsterdam. A combination several buildings is also possible.

  • Building access

You cannot use all wheelchair-accessible entrances on campus by default (independently). If this is necessary for you, you can get authorisation for this on your VU pass. Please contact your study advisor.

  • Personal safe

Are you unable to carry your study materials with you all day? Or do you have special equipment that you need to store safely? In that case, you can make use of personal lockers located in the Main Building, Initium, and OZW.

The lockers measure 56 cm in height, 31 cm in width, and 50 cm in depth. Unlike standard lockers, these personal lockers are not automatically opened at 11:00 PM.

Personal lockers are assigned upon request. For more information, please contact your academic advisor.

Would you like to know where the standard lockers are located? Please consult the overview standard lockers.

  • Rest room

If you need occasional rest due to your disability, you can use a rest room. Rest rooms have the following general features:

    • Access only with authorised pass.
    • There is a lounger, bed or stretcher available. Each rest room is decorated differently.
    • Some rest rooms can be locked from the inside (HG, NU and Initium).
    • There is a free/occupied sign on each door.
    • Air conditioning available, blackout possible in some rooms.
    • Advance booking (max 1 hour at a time) in the Outlook calendar is required.
    • The room is intended for 1 person.

See the overview of all rest rooms.

  • Adjustments lecture hall/teaching space

Consider adapted furniture due to your disability. Discuss with your study advisor what you need in terms of adaptations.

  • Parking

Some parking spaces are available on campus for students.

View information about parking at VU Amsterdam and how to apply for a parking pass here.
