Successful webinar about Japan and the Netherlands

The NL Japan SDG webinar, featuring esteemed speakers from Japan and the Netherlands, offered a profound exploration of collaborative solutions for sustainable development. Organised by VU Amsterdam and the Embassy of Japan in the Netherlands, this virtual symposium highlighted the indispensable role of collaboration in addressing global challenges and driving meaningful change.

The event commenced with a warm Welcome Address by Rector Magnificus, Prof. dr. Jeroen J.G. Geurts, emphasising the transformative potential of collaboration in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) worldwide. This sentiment was echoed by the distinguished Ambassador of Japan to the Netherlands, H.E. Mr. Hiroshi Minami, in his insightful Opening Remarks, which underscored the historical ties between NL and Japan and the imperative for joint action in sustainable development, circular economy, and energy transition, especially with Japan hosting the Osaka World Expo 2025.

Throughout the webinar, distinguished speakers including Professor Kenzo Hiroki from GRIPS, Japan; VU Amsterdam academics- Professor Wendy Janssens, Professor Philipp Pattberg, Professor Menno Pradhan, and our Guest speaker, Mr. Berend van de Kraats shared their expertise on pressing global issues spanning health, education, innovation, disaster risk reduction, and water management. Their insights illuminated the imperative of cross-sectoral collaborations in tackling these multifaceted challenges effectively. Professor Bart Bossink moderated the webinar, elevating the event to the next level.

Discussions also delved into the importance of effective practices at various levels, emphasising the significance of international, national, and regional cooperation. Strategic Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) were highlighted as essential drivers of progress, enabling the implementation of innovative solutions and sustainable development initiatives.

Furthermore, the webinar underscored the importance of inclusive growth and resilience, particularly in developing and emerging economies. By examining the multi-faceted approach required for sustainable development, attendees gained insights into how collaborative efforts can pave the way for transformative change.

As the event concluded, participants were urged to harness the power of collaboration to drive global sustainable development initiatives forward. The NL Japan SDG webinar served as a testament to the shared commitment of Japan and the Netherlands towards a sustainable future, highlighting the collective impact that can be achieved through collaborative action.
