This course is aimed at anyone who is interested in the sustainable use of metals from any perspective. Taking a long-durée perspective, we will trace the mining of metals from prehistory to the future using selected examples. We will also examine the central role of energy resources and reflect on the life cycle of metals in the context of global material cycles, planetary boundaries and climate change. The course requires very little background knowledge in the fields of archaeology and chemistry and explicitly invites students from other fields to participate.
At the end of the course, students will be able to, adapt and apply skills and theories to new situations and to explore complex issues in innovative ways. Based on what has been learnt, students will evaluate with more attention to different disciplinary perspectives and future problems will be considered critically and described in ways not seriously impeded by omissions.
