Education Showcase: students determine their own assessment format

9 April 2024
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if your students had the control over designing their own assessments?

In the honors course 'Big data meets small data' at the Faculty of Social Sciences, students carry precisely that responsibility. Students are given the freedom to choose their own assessment formats by exploring self-selected topics, attempting to combine quantitative social media analysis with qualitative research.

The teacher stands not above, but alongside the students. Together, they discuss the learning objectives, paying attention to the question: how do they intend to demonstrate mastery of these objectives? The teacher encourages them to carefully examine the assessment criteria.

The result? Engaging and creative group presentations, such as a radio programme, interviews, and recorded presentations, effectively reflecting the learning objectives.
