Students are ultimately responsible for their own learning process and academic success, but in practice teachers often continue to play an important guiding role. Even with well-designed education, success is not guaranteed: students make their own choices regarding how and when they learn.
In this session, we will explore insights from the literature on self-directed learning, focusing on responsibility, ownership, agency, and agentic learning. We will translate these insights into practical ways of designing education that encourages students to take a more active role in directing their own learning process.
