VU AI in Education Show & Share

Generative AI is having a serious impact on education, influencing learning, teaching, and assessment. The pace of technological advancement in this field is at an all-time high. What developments are we seeing, and how can we, as VU Amsterdam, respond to these changes? We aim to ensure that AI is used responsibly, and this forms the central theme of this event on Thursday 5 December 2024.

During this day, we aim to take stock of the current situation at VU Amsterdam: how are we experiencing the opportunities and threats at this moment? How are policies, guidelines, and practices evolving? How are programmes integrating AI into their curricula, and how are we making our students AI literate? And are our staff and teachers themselves becoming more AI literate? What are examples of using generative AI to promote critical thinking? These are the questions that will be addressed at this summit. Join us for this event and share insights on how we, as programmes, teachers, and experts, can make use of opportunities and tackle challenges.

Do you have an application you'd like to showcase during this day? Let us know, and we will try to make space for it.

More information on all activities for each round can be found below.

Round 1 – 13:00-14:15

  • 1.1 An AI philosophy

AI leads to practical and ethical issues. What kind of legislation is needed? What influence does AI have on the job market? Can you use AI responsibly? Philosopher Carlo Ierna (Faculty of Humanities) will guide you through this discussion.

    Speaker: Carlo Ierna
    Location: t.b.a.

  • 1.2. What is the impact of AI from the perspective of examination boards?

Are you a member of an examination board or an academic director? Join this closed session to discuss current developments and how examination boards can best approach the impact of AI on education and assessment.

    Led by: Duco Bannink
    Location: t.b.a.

  • 1.3 How can we integrate AI literacy education for students into our curricula?

Are you a portfolio holder in education, education director, or curriculum coordinator? Join this closed session to share how you are (or not yet) making students AI literate, discuss best practices and resources, and identify the next steps for your programme(s).

    Led by: Silvester Draaijer
    Location: t.b.a.

  • 1.4 What are best practices for using AI to teach critical thinking to students?

During this session, we will explore case studies from Thibault Schrepel (RCH), Mohammad Rezazade Mehrizi, and Ella Hafermalz (SBE). Both have used AI in student assignments to promote critical thinking. Learn from their experiences and consider whether this approach could fit your course.

    Led by: Charlotte Meijer
    Location: t.b.a.

  • 1.5 How can tutor bots support students in their learning?

Tutor bots have the potential to offer personalized learning experiences. Lothar Kuijper and Matthijs Valkering (Beta) implemented a tutor bot in education, where students explain statistical concepts to the bot to learn more effectively. Learn how Lothar and Matthijs put this into practice, and hear what students think of this method.

Speakers: Lothar Kuijper and Matthijs Valkering
    Location: t.b.a.

Round 2 – 14:30-15:45

  • 2.1 Can generative AI be sustainable?

We will explore the opportunities of generative AI during this day. But what about sustainability? In this session, the VU Sustainability Office will address this question by outlining the challenges and discussing guidelines society and VU can adopt to mitigate the impact.

    Led by: Jorim Tielbeek
    Location: t.b.a.

  • 2.2 What is the impact of generative AI on the thesis process?

Are you a thesis coordinator or supervisor? Join this session to discuss current developments and emerging best practices in thesis supervision. Or perhaps the conversation on this topic still needs to be initiated? Share your thoughts with the Law programme, which is currently going through this process.

Led by: Jan Struiksma and Lodewijk Smeehuijzen
    Location: t.b.a.

  • 2.3 How can generative AI be used for interactive simulations?

Generative AI can support real-time conversational interaction. How can this help learners with general skills such as study skills, communication, providing feedback, collaboration, and more?

Are you an instructor involved in communication education? Join this session, where we will showcase several existing applications and discuss their impact together.

    Led by: Esther Schagen
    Location: t.b.a.

  • 2.4 How can generative AI be used to advance the development of education?

Sharon Klinkenberg (UvA, FMG), lecturer in Methods and Techniques and head of TLC FMG, will demonstrate how he uses generative AI to develop and deliver his methods education. Learn about the latest methods where he uses multiple tools simultaneously, including GitHub. Plus, discover how he applies these tools in his research as an added bonus!

    Led by: Sharon Klinkenberg
    Location: t.b.a.

  • 2.5 What new applications are on the horizon and worth sharing?

Are you an innovator who always wants to try out the latest tools or develop them yourself? Then join this session. We'll engage in a discussion, showcase the newest features to each other, and explore the potential impact these innovations can have on the teaching and learning process.
