Understanding politics in a complex world

Find solutions to social and political problems

Never before have political decisions been so interconnected across the world. Climate change, threats to democracy, shifts in global economic power, the rise of AI and big data. They all impact global politics. But how? Who are the main actors? And what are the critical factors in the choices that political actors make and the outcomes that we get?

The Master’s in Political Science at VU Amsterdam teaches you to analyse political power in its social and international context. Offering a broad range of theoretical perspectives and research skills, the programme enables you to analyse the major political challenges of our time and the solutions proposed for them.

The VU Master Political Science is set up as an integrated programme with a special focus on the interactions between national and international politics. In the course of the programme, students specialize in one of three specialisations:

Discover your Political Science programme

The Political Science programme at VU Amsterdam is personable, international, and engaging. With an annual intake of between 60 and 80 students, our students form an international and diverse community. We use the diversity in cultural backgrounds as we learn and discuss about international political issues and conflicts. Our staff is international as well. Through their research and societal engagement, the lecturers are deeply involved in the topics that they teach.

The way the programme combines a solid basis as a political scientist with the opportunity to specialize in a socially relevant domain is unique and will give you an edge in the job market. You will be prepared for a career in policy making, research, politics, journalism, consultancy or international business.
