There is a lot going on in the world like melting permafrost, the extinction of animal and plant species, extreme weather and too much CO2 in the atmosphere. Do you want to bring about a change? Do you want to actively contribute to a more sustainable society by applying your knowledge and figuring out effective solutions to environmental issues? If you choose a bachelor’s or master’s programme at VU Amsterdam, you will study and research the environment from multiple perspectives.
Are you a pure scientist, fascinated by the 'Earth System' and looking for answers? Do you want to know what processes take place in the soil, water and air and how they interact? You will research the impact that humans have on these systems and which measures actually have an effect. More and more people are opting for electric cars and bicycles, which is a great step forward. But how should we deal with batteries that no longer work? Is there already a way to recycle them?
And if you look at recent times when almost everyone worked from home, ordered parcels and food online, went hiking in droves and left garbage everywhere in nature, what would be the best way to make effective policies? Is imposing an environmental tax a possible solution? The socio-economic and political aspects of the environment are just as fascinating. You will get to work on these issues, too.
You can also look at the environment from a biological point of view. Then, you will focus on plants and animals and the way they live together, move into new areas or move away from an area. Analysing biological systems and explaining behaviour is fascinating. This is where ecology, evolution, physiology, genetics and biochemistry meet. Whichever programme you choose, you will be working on sustainable solutions that are genuinely good for the environment.
