Literature and Society

What is your journey?

Almost all students who graduate a Literature and Society programme go on to follow master's programmes – at VU Amsterdam, elsewhere in the Netherlands, or even abroad. The 'English Literature in a Visual Culture' master's programme at VU is the most popular, but some students choose to follow a more linguistics-focused master's degree, or two-year master's programme in education that leads to a job in teaching. Some students take a research master's and eventually a PhD position. There are plenty of possibilities.

Having completed bachelor's and master's degrees in literature, your writing skills will be top-notch, and your ability to think critically and ask challenging questions will be expertly honed. Plus, you will have the capacity to distill large amounts of complex information into well-structured, clear communications. These skills can be put to use in academia, the public sector, publishing houses, media, and more.

What can you do after your Bachelor’s degree?

Further your education

A master's in a related specialisation is a logical next step for any graduate in Literature and Society. Depending on what you want to do next, you could choose:

English Literature in a Visual Culture
Nederlandse Letterkunde en het Literaire Veld (in Dutch)
Literature & Contested spaces: Research Master
Educatie in Taal en Cultuurwetenschappen: Educatieve Master (in Dutch)
Comparative Arts and Media Studies

You can choose for a Master’s programme at other universities as well:

Cultural Analysis
Film Studies
Gender Studies
Journalism
Literature Studies
Translation Studies

Start your career

There are many opportunities for graduates from Literature and Society, but most of our students continue to pursue careers that allow them to think critically and challenge social norms. Within the academic world, our graduates become high-school teachers or university professors. In the literary world, they work in publishing houses, organise literary events, edit journals or in some other way contribute to the written word. Some students also become researchers for ministries or non-profit organisations. Whatever you choose, VU's career orientation course is here to help you take the next step.
