Literature and Society

How does literature bring about social change? How does our visual culture influence the way we read text, and vice versa? How is our sense of identity shaped by language and by narrative?

Throughout the bachelor's track Literature and Society: English at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, you will ask all these questions and many more. You will learn how to challenge the culture around you.

Literature and Society: English is for you if you:

  1. Want to focus purely on literature: this study is not an English language study, but it's all about literature and the impact of literature on society. Linguistics are only a modest part of the curriculum
  2. Feel at home in an English-speaking and international environment; this track is 100% in English
  3. Like to read: you'll be reading about one novel a week, plus additions and assignments
  4. Like to work in small groups, with personal attention
  5. Want to learn how to write academically and creatively.

While literature often reflects major social movements, like the rise of feminism, it also has the power to effect social change. Consider the abolition of slavery in the US and the impact of novels like Uncle Tom's Cabin.

What's more, society's reading of literature in the present can change people's behaviour in the future - take the climate crisis, for instance. Text and change are intertwined.
