Our history
In 1957 a group of reformed history students founded the association VSGVU. VSGVU used to be a corporal association, but started addresing the improvement of education in the late 60's. In 1970, during a trip to the Dutch island Callantsoog, VSGVU decided to change their name to Merlijn: the wizard from the legend of king Arthur. In the 70's, Merlijn went on a political left course. As a response to this, the association "Archimedes" was founded. Archimedes merged with Merlijn again after a few years.
Merlijn is nowadays a political neutral association. It strives to be a coasy and accesible association without obligation for members. Furthermore, we try to stand for the matters of history students at the VU.
Ambiance
Merlijn is in the social room of humanities (HG12A-43) Students can meet each other here, have a break but also study. We organise borrels, movie nights, trips to a historical town and readings. The big trip is the most important event of the year. Examples of past locations are Lissabon, Edinburgh, Budapest, Istanbul, Rome and Krakow.
Students and education
Merlijn also addresses the matters of history students at the VU. We try to address issues at our GA. An important service of us is the book discount that we over to members, you can get discount while buying your study books.
