Transport Economics

Je schrijft je in voor de eenjarige Master Spatial, Transport and Environmental Economics. De opleiding is volledig Engelstalig. Gedurende het studieprogramma kun je je specialiseren in één van de vier richtingen of een combinatie daarvan:

Stedelijke en Regionale Economie

Deze specialisatie gaat over de voordelen (denk aan hoge lonen) en de nadelen (denk aan criminaliteit) van steden en regio’s. Bijvoorbeeld: waarom bloeien sommige steden, terwijl andere gebieden krimpen? Welke soorten bedrijven en mensen neigen naar ruimtelijk clustering en waarom? Wat leert de economische theorie ons over de beleidsuitdagingen waarmee grootstedelijke regio’s worden geconfronteerd, zoals criminaliteit, segregatie, torenhoge woningprijzen, files en milieuvervuiling? Hoe kun je de relevante technieken, methoden en tools op dit gebied toepassen en verder ontwikkelen?

Vervoerseconomie

Wat zijn de oorzaken en gevolgen van de groeiende vraag naar mobiliteit vanuit een micro-economisch perspectief? Hoe kunnen we problemen aanpakken zoals congestie, betrouwbaarheid, veiligheid en milieuvervuiling? Is concurrentie in de luchtvaart en het openbaar vervoer gewenst en wat zijn de implicaties daarvan voor overheidsbeleid? Is er een manier om automobilisten te stimuleren om de piekuren te vermijden en zo de druk op het wegennet weg te nemen? Wat voor invloed heeft Uber op het gebruik van het OV?

Milieueconomie

Wat zijn de economische aspecten van milieuproblemen en beleid? Hoe breng je wetenschappelijke en beleidsmatige deskundigheid samen? Hoe kun je de noodzaak om de economie te integreren met inzichten uit andere disciplines – met name de milieuwetenschappen – aantonen? In welke mate zijn bijvoorbeeld milieubelastingen te laag, en waarom? Waarom zouden landen zich aansluiten bij het Kyoto Protocol of het Sofia Protocol? Wat is de rol van handelssancties hierin?

Vastgoedeconomie en -financiering

Hoe functioneren vastgoedmarkten? In het bijzonder, hoe wordt de prijs bepaald op deze markten en hoe worden portefeuilles beheerd? Wat voor invloed hebben ruimtelijke ordening, infrastructuur en overheidsbeleid op de prijsdynamiek van onroerend goed? En wat is de relatie tussen onroerend goed en locatie?

Some examples of fundamental questions that we address: why and where do which types of people and firms increasingly want to cluster in space? Why do some cities thrive, while others struggle? What does economic theory teach us about policy challenges that metropolitan areas face, such as crime, segregation, traffic congestion and environmental pollution? Samenvatting

This master’s programme focuses on the economic dimensions of local, regional, and global environmental challenges, the use and depletion of natural resources, and the role of market-based policies to incentivize the adoption of environmentally friendly practices and technologies. These questions are important both for improving the sustainability of our current living standards and for fighting the devastating effects of climate change. The programme discusses how government and society can rise to the challenge of managing environmental quality, natural resources, and the energy transition effectively. 

Some examples of fundamental questions that we discuss are: What policies can best address pollution and other negative consequences of economic activities? What characterizes efficient exploitation of renewable resources (such as forestry and fishery) and non-renewable resources (such as fossil fuels and minerals), and how does this differ from a free-market outcome? How do environmental policies induce innovation, and what role do technology policies play in environmental regulation? How can climate policies avoid being undone by the unintended consequences of market responses like “carbon leakage”, the “rebound effect” or the “Green Paradox”?

The master's programme equips the students with the state-of-the-art of academic economic insights to analyse and answer such questions and provide them with an evidence-based foundation.

In the courses, we take a predominantly microeconomic perspective and apply state-of-the-art theory and econometric techniques. Hence, this high-quality one-year programme offers students the knowledge and practical skills to tackle complex problems at a high level of abstraction, while emphasizing the need to translate theoretical solutions and empirical evidence into clear-cut policy advice. You will learn techniques to measure the value of natural resources and the costs and benefits of pollution abatement, including analytical models as well as stated preference and ”revealed preference” methods. You will study the challenges of regulating greenhouse gas emissions, including issues of taxation, international trade, and the design of international environmental agreements such as the Paris Accord. You will learn to evaluate intertemporal tradeoffs in managing natural resources, carbon budgets, and technological change. The role of market-based incentives and behavior-based “nudges” in improving environmental and societal outcomes will also be discussed. Economic models will be substantiated by teaching the latest empirical findings in economic literature.

On average, households in the Netherlands spend no less than about 30% of their income on real estate. Also, the prices of commercial properties are sky-high. Real estate prices heavily fluctuate, over both time and space. Prices in Amsterdam are, for example, many multiples above real estate prices in more peripheral areas.

How do real estate markets function? This is the main theme that the Real Estate specialization addresses.  More specifically, how does price determination work in these markets, and how are portfolios managed? What is the impact of land use regulation, transport infrastructure, and public policy on real estate price dynamics? What is the relationship between real estate and its location? In the Real Estate specialization, you acquire the theoretical and empirical knowledge to answer all these questions.

This specialization trains you to become a real estate professional, for which there is high demand in the industry. The specialization is embedded in the master Spatial, Transport & Environmental Economics. In this master, students develop the skills to analyse large (spatial) datasets. Although real estate markets have become global, there are major differences between local real estate markets.  A thorough understanding of real estate dynamics, therefore, requires an integrative view from both a financial, economic and spatial perspective. The interrelationship of the Real Estate specialization with the Urban & Regional Economics and/or Transport economics specialization offers you this unique possibility.

Ontdek de Master Spatial, Transport and Environmental Economics

Het studieprogramma behandelt relevante beleidsvraagstukken van deze tijd op gebied van regionale ontwikkeling, stedelijke problemen, transportbeleid, milieuproblematiek en vastgoedeconomie. Hiermee heeft deze master betrekking op vele aspecten van de samenleving waarin ruimte, afstand en netwerken een fundamentele rol spelen.

Hoe zit het jaar eruit?

Eerste semester

In de eerste periode leer je over economische theorie en onderzoeksmethoden. Na zes weken kies je ten minste een kernvak en een keuzevak. Het programma biedt je de mogelijkheid om je te specialiseren in verschillende combinaties van stedelijke en regionale economie; vervoerseconomie, milieueconomie en vastgoedeconomie. Je sluit het eerste semester af me een onderzoeksproject, waarin je een literatuuroverzicht schrijft aan de hand van een aantal aan elkaar gerelateerde wetenschappelijke artikelen.

Tweede semester

In het tweede semester volg je weer een kern- en keuzevak. Het grootste deel van het tweede semester besteed je aan het schrijven van je master thesis. Deze master thesis schrijf je individueel. Tegelijkertijd neem je deel aan een thesis seminar, waarin alle studenten van de master Spatial, Transport and Environmental Economics hun bevindingen presenteren en bespreken. Een stage is niet verplicht, maar je kunt ervoor kiezen om je thesis te koppelen aan een stage.  

Waarom Spatial, Transport and Environmental Economics?

  • Unieke master: de enige in de wereld die stedelijke/regionale kwesties, transport- en milieuproblemen behandelt vanuit een economisch perspectief.
  • Goede beroepsperspectieven: meestal een baan binnen drie maanden na je afstuderen tegen een hoger salaris dan andere economische afgestudeerden, als beleidseconoom bij (inter-)nationale overheidsinstanties of consultancybedrijven, luchtvaart- of openbaarvervoersbedrijven. Anderen kiezen voor een academische carrière.
  • Docenten zijn internationaal en nationaal bekende hoogleraren zoals Erik Verhoef, Hans Koster, Jos van Ommeren en Henri de Groot. Zij zijn actief in de beleidspraktijk en nemen deel aan relevante debatten in de media.
  • Het onderzoek van de School of Business and Economics staat op de eerste plaats in Nederland op gebied van kwaliteit, maatschappelijk belang en duurzaamheid.

Verander de toekomst met de Master Spatial, Transport and Environmental Economics

Met het halen van de mastertitel heb jij de theoretische kennis én de praktische vaardigheden om complexe problemen op te lossen op een hoog abstractieniveau. Daarnaast leer je theoretische oplossingen om te zetten in helder en toepasbaar beleidsadvies. De inhoud van de master is stevig geworteld in de economie. Het voordeel van deze opleiding is dat je naar concrete beleidsvragen kijkt. Zoals: moeten we rekeningrijden invoeren en hoe? Is een CO2 belasting een juiste prikkel om te voldoen aan de doelen om klimaatneutraal te worden? Is er een woningtekort en hoe lossen we dat op? Met deze master kun je beleidsmaker of onderzoeker worden in overheids- of consultancy organisaties. Je kunt ook een universitaire carrière beginnen als Assistent in Opleiding (aio, of PhD).
