Generative AI (GenAI) has become an integral part of higher education. How can you help students use AI critically? What does it mean for assessment? And how can GenAI strengthen your own teaching? From the 2026-2027 academic year, the VU Centre for Teaching & Learning will offer a new series of modular workshops on AI literacy.
The workshops are designed for teachers in higher education who want to use GenAI consciously and responsibly in their teaching. There are four main themes, which are: knowledge & skills (1), core concepts (2), designing & enhancing teaching (3) and broad & societal impact (4). You can choose from these themes the short workshops that best suit your questions and experience.

What will you learn?
AI literacy is about more than understanding how ChatGPT works. It means using AI consciously, critically and responsibly in your teaching. During the workshops, you will learn:
- how AI systems work and where their limitations lie;
- how to critically evaluate AI-generated output;
- how to make informed decisions about whether or not to use AI;
- how to address topics such as academic integrity, bias, privacy and sustainability;
- how AI can support educational design, assessment and your own workflow.
This allows you to build the confidence, step by step, to consciously integrate GenAI into your teaching.
Create your own learning path
Every teacher has different questions and a different starting point. That is why you decide which workshops to attend. You don’t have to complete a full programme; instead, you can create your own personalized learning path.
Each workshop lasts 1.5 hours and combines theory with practical applications that you can use immediately in your own teaching.
The workshops are based on the AI-GO framework developed by Npuls and the UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers. You start with the fundamentals before exploring topics such as pedagogy, educational design, assessment and the societal impact of AI.
