Max Nijman (founder VU startup Flame Away) one of the 50 FD Talents

27 March 2023
Max Nijman, founder of VU startup Flame Away, has been chosen as one of the 50 talents to appear in the Financieel Dagblad. Nijman also won the first prize in the Idea phase of the Philips Innovation Award. Flame Away is a work of art made of glass that can be thrown to extinguish fire when a fire breaks out.

Max started three years ago with a study project that grew into a life-saving product called the Flame Away. It is a work of art made of glass that can be thrown in the event of a fire. According to Nijman, it is often sufficient to extinguish fire. 'It is extremely motivating that Flame Away has a place in the Financieel Dagblad after 3.5 years of work. If I can save even one life with this, my goal has been achieved!' says Max.

A start-up in the industry is tricky. The very strict safety rules inhibit innovation, says Nijman. ‘But entrepreneurship teaches me a lot about myself. I want to grow in my work-life balance. Both my best and worst quality is stubbornness. Once I have a goal, I don't let go. As a result, I have been focused on the company for the past three years, but I was not always able to do things on a personal level.'

Nijman won the first prize in the Idea phase of the Philips Innovation Award and was selected for the Semi Finals.

After three years of research at VU Amsterdam, support at Demonstrator Lab and the company fire brigade, Flame Away raised the first round of funding and the product could be developed and launched.
