Immediate national investments in the ICT developments are needed so we don't miss the boat. Otherwise we may be forced to buy knowledge back at a higher price.

A sense of urgency permeates through all fifty pages of the manifesto ‘Future Computer Systems and Networking Research in the Netherlands’. Investing in computer systems and networks (jointly referred to as "compsys") is certainly essential for the whole society, says Prof. Iosup. "On a daily basis, two thirds of the economy depends on computer systems. The rest depends on them indirectly. Compsys is interwoven with society, however, the investments ceased after the first decade of the 21st century. We left it over to the Big Tech, forgetting the Big Tech doesn't serve society."
