FSS researchers present magazine on care in the city

11 April 2022
On 18 March 2022 the magazine 'Living and Caring in the Big City' was presented in Pakhuis de Zwijger. FSS researchers Ludo Glimmerveen (Organization Sciences) and Anne-Mei The (Sociology) played a central role in the realisation of this publication.

The magazine is a special publication of the Ben Sajet Centrum, a knowledge workplace for long-term care in Amsterdam in which Glimmerveen and The are involved.

The articles in the magazine address the following question from various angles: how can professional care better connect with everyday life at home in the super-diverse society? The magazine contains insights from research, stories of experience, interviews, columns, fact sheets and tools for policy and practice in care for the elderly and people with intellectual disabilities.

The first copies of the magazine were presented to the Moedernetwerk Amsterdam, an organisation for and by mothers with a child with an intellectual disability. On behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, Theo van Uum, Director of Long-Term Care, received the magazine.

The magazine is freely available online. You can find the online version here. The magazine can also be downloaded as a PDF here.

During the symposium researchers, experts by experience, professionals and administrators talked about the possibilities of preventing or alleviating crisis situations at home. Care organisation Cordaan explained how they are working on a more suitable service for families - often with an immigrant background - who continue to care for a child with an intellectual disability at home, even when the demand for care increases. At the same time, the stories of experience of Moedernetwerk Amsterdam showed that the needs of families and the regular care services are not always aligned - sometimes resulting in acute crises. Various agreements were made to continue discussions after the symposium about how to bridge the distance that people sometimes experience in healthcare.

The complete symposium can be viewed on the website of Pakhuis de Zwijger and via YouTube.
