The Faculty of Social Sciences accommodates a wide range of disciplines, combining the classical disciplines of political science, sociology and cultural anthropology with modern disciplines in the field of management, policy, communication and organization. Our strength lies in the close cooperation between the range of disciplines; our focus is squarely on society and current issues.

The Faculty of Social Sciences has over 275 staff members: 230 are scientific staff and 45 are support staff. The work of the Faculty is overseen by the dean. Alongside the dean, the other members of the Faculty Board are the portfolio holder for teaching, the portfolio holder for research, an operational manager, and an advisory student member.

Research

The faculty’s research activities are accommodated within the faculty’s research institute, the Institute for Societal Resilience (ISR), which emphasizes multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. The various disciplines of the faculty collaborate on resilience issues, which have been organized into four substantive subthemes. Transdisciplinary collaboration with societal partners forms an explicit goal within this process. The research institute is overseen by the dean.

Teaching and education

The faculty provides Bachelor’s programmes, Master’s programmes, pre-Master's programmes and minors. A total of 1,200 Bachelor’s students, 350 pre-Master’s students and 1,000 Master's students study at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Every year, the faculty receives 90 exchange students for Bachelor’s education and about 70 Bachelor's students from the faculty opt to take elective courses at our partner universities abroad.
