Law in a time of International and European crisis

Law beyond the state

Can European and international law help address the challenges of our time, such as climate change, migration, new technologies, and cultural conflicts? How can international law bring order and justice to global relations? How does the EU work, and how does it affect life and government in Europe?

In the European and International Law track, you will explore legal frameworks that go beyond national borders. You will study the foundations of European and international public law and examine how these legal domains complement and sometimes conflict with each other. How do they contribute to solving cross-border challenges such as climate change, migration, inequality, technological transformation, and war? And how do they relate to national legislation and democratic decision-making? You will investigate the role of law in a globalising world and seek to understand tensions between sovereignty and democracy.

Do you aspire to a career in European and international law, and are you interested in the political, economic, and social context in which the law operates? If so, this track within the Master’s in Law at VU Amsterdam is the right choice for you.

Law in action

Law in action

Studying law at VU means Law in Action. You will learn how to apply the law in practice and develop a strong understanding of its significance in society. In class, you will approach legal problems from an interdisciplinary perspective and critically discuss real-world cases. Lecturers organise moot courts and regularly invite guest speakers from practice. We also arrange relevant excursions, with a visit to the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg as the yearly highlight. You can also learn how to provide legal advice to NGOs in our law clinics, which include the International Law Clinic, the EU Citizen Rights Corner, and the Climate Change and Sustainability Law Clinic.
