Discover the history behind today’s challenges

A master’s degree in History makes you an attractive employment prospect because you have broad-based knowledge of societal challenges from a contemporary and historical perspective.

Besides, you have developed an analytical way of reading and writing. These are skills that are specially important in today’s information driven society. Many of our alumni found jobs as advisor, journalist, consultant and policy analist.

With a master’s title in History you can embark on PhD research at a university or research institute. If you aim at an academic career you could also consider following the two-year research master’s degree course in History. This master’s degree course trains you specifically as a (university) researcher.

What can you do after your Master's degree?

Entering the job market

As a professional historian, there are many types of organisations you can work for, such as governmental institutions, businesses, museums or international research institutes. Your ability to place current political and social issues in their proper historical context will also make you well-suited for a career in politics or journalism. Also, after taking an additional year of specialised master’s courses, you could find a position in teaching or research.

Pursuing an academic career

With a master’s degree in History, you can embark on PhD research at a university or research institute. If you want to pursue an academic career, you could also consider following the two-year master’s programme in Humanities Research: Global History. This master’s programme focuses on training you to be an academic researcher.
