Communication Science: Marketing Communications

Are you strategic, creative – and interested in how brands can truly engage and persuade people? In the Master’s specialisation CS: Marketing Communications at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, you apply scientific insights to develop effective marketing communications of the future.

Consumers are exposed to commercial messages every day. How do you make sure your story stands out, is credible, and truly makes an impact? During your studies, you gain scientific knowledge about persuasive communication, consumer behaviour, public relations, and branding, helping you answer exactly that question.

Theory, strategy, and creativity in real-life assignments

In CS: Marketing Communications, you combine scientific theory with strategic thinking and creativity in your courses and assignments. You regularly collaborate with stakeholders from professional practice (such as companies or non-profit organisations), tackling communication challenges from multiple perspectives. In addition, you conduct scientific research into the effectiveness of communication techniques, learning to substantiate what works — and why.

Why study CS: Marketing Communications?

As a Master’s student in CS: Marketing Communications, you are challenged to solve real-world problems in a professional context. For example, in the course Impact, you provide advice to a societal organisation facing a marketing communication challenge.

What makes our Master’s unique is the wide range of electives: from corporate communication to creative writing, and from media analytics to storytelling. In this programme, you will not only get to observe the influence of media on behavioural change, but you will learn to truly understand it. Media play a leading role in an increasing number of behavioural change processes: from consumer behaviour to volunteering, and from sustainability choices to health and nutrition. Once you understand the underlying principles that apply each and every time, you will have developed your most important professional skill set.
