IVM values education and its importance to students and teachers. For this reason, several teaching initiatives have been developed within the Institute to support our staff aiming to improve our teaching within the different education programmes that IVM staff is involved in, and to integrate various innovative teaching methods into our curriculum. This is an ongoing process, with some outcomes presented below.
IVM teaching workshops
From January to June 2021 the junior lecturers from IVM (Rosa Pols, Roos Haasnoot, and Ana Cassanti) hosted several online workshops about teaching. These workshops aimed to inform IVM staff about tools and strategies for (online) teaching and to share experiences and best practices. Themes were chosen based on interest and knowledge.
The workshops had the following themes:
- Video editing – how to improve your pre-recorded lectures
- Student well-being
- Student engagement in online lectures
- Mixed classroom
If you are working at IVM and you are interested in future workshops, keep an eye on your email or get in contact with one of the junior lecturers.
Education clips
To make sure that the collected tips, tools, and knowledge are recorded and accessible for (future) staff to learn from, the junior lecturers (JuDo’s) from IVM (Rosa Pols, Roos Haasnoot and Ana Cassanti) recorded short clips about different topics. These clips can provide teachers with the necessary information and tools to apply innovative educational methods within their own teaching. As JuDo’s they work on innovation in teaching, assist in several courses, and share knowledge and experiences with the Institute's staff.
Moreover, these videos are a stepping stone for other teaching staff of VU Amsterdam aimed at inspiring and encouraging teachers and perhaps junior lecturers from other departments to do something similar.
