Studying with ADHD

Last updated on 4 December 2025
Do you study at VU Amsterdam and have ADHD?

Do you need extra support and guidance to function well and successfully complete your studies? VU Amsterdam offers counselling for all students who need it. This guidance can also help with symptoms associated with ADHD and ADD.

Academic advisor

Your faculty's academic advisor is your first point of contact. They can help you with study planning and facilities for exams. Are you experiencing study delays? Please report this to your academic advisor as soon as possible.

Student counsellor

If your studies are delayed, you can also contact the student counsellor. They can inform you about possible financial arrangements.

Workshops and training sessions by student psychological counsellors

The student psychological counsellors organise various workshops, training sessions and groups. This guidance can also provide support for various symptoms associated with ADHD. Please note: While this guidance can be useful for students with ADHD, it is not specifically aimed at ADHD.

Additional help is available for the following complaints

  • Fear of failure and uncertainty

Do you suffer from negative thoughts and reduced self-confidence in the field of study due to your ADHD? Then check out the Fear of Failure training.

  • Difficulty with planning and overview, procrastination

Do you find that planning and keeping track is difficult? Do you need a social stick to maintain structure? Do you enjoy thinking with others, and getting advice from fellow students? Then you are the student for the Back on Track study group. In the group, you will work on planning skills. You will also learn to apply different study strategies.

  • Stuck in a negative spiral

    Module 1: The negative spiral

In this module, you will gain insight into what your negative spiral looks like. This might include procrastination, not getting things done, and cancelling social activities when busy. Find more information on this webpage.

    Module 3: Take action

In this module, you will learn to create an action plan and start working on it. This will help you break your negative spiral. Go to this webpage for more information.

  • Under- and over-stimulation

Are you spending too much time studying, or too little? How do you recognise the signals your body gives that it is time to put on the brakes? In module 2 'balance and relaxation', you will learn to better manage your own energy distribution. Read more about the Balance and relaxation module here.
