Academic advice 

Academic advisors assist Medicine students and students of the Master Oncology, Personalized Medicince and Epidemiology. The Faculty of Medicine VU has two academic advisors: Marjolein Pouw en Renate Dekker.  All conversations with academic advisors are strictly confidential.

You can contact an academic advisor for information, guidance and advice regarding various subjects that are important to you and may affect your studies.

Online drop-in sessions

Every Monday and Thursday from 14:00 - 15:00 there is an online drop-in session via Teams. Expect a conversation of ten minutes.

Matters for which you go to the academic advisors

  • Urgently need help?

    It is often possible to make an appointment the same week. Is there a personal or psychological emergency? Send us an e-mail (studieadviseurs.vu@amsterdamumc.nl) so we can discuss the possibilities for an earlier appointment. Call your general practitioner in case of an immediate psychological emergency or – outside office hours – the Amsterdam general practice center, tel. 088-0030600. Are you considering suicide? You can reach 113 Suicide Prevention 24/7 is www.113.nl or 0900-0113.

  • Personal circumstances

    Life goes on, also when you're stuyiding. Most students will experience personal problems of one kind or another, examples are a lack of self-confidence, bereavement, loneliness, relationship difficulties, addiction, illness, somberness, or a general sense of dissatisfaction with yourself or your life. Contact the academic advisors when these problems affect your studies.

    You may be eligible for financial assistenence under the Student Support Regulation if you experience study delay due to special circumstances. In case of prolonged study delay it is advisable to contact the student counsellors.  

  • Requests to the Examination Board

    The advisors advise the Examination Board Science Masters on individual students' requests. If you wish to submit a request to the Examination Board, you are advised to contact one of the advisors first to find out if the Examnination Board is the right place for your application and whether your application letter meets the requirements.

  • Studying with a disability or chronic illness

    Do you have a disibility or chronic illness? The Info Point can provide general advise and information about studying with a disibility. Make an appointment with the academic advisors to timely assess wich accommodations you need and wheter they can be arranged.  

  • Top-level athletes and other talents

    If you perform at top-level in sports or a cultural fiels alongside your studies you may be eligible for the Top Performance status. If so, please review the Student facilities regulation and discuss with the academic advisors what options are available within your study program. 

  • Study skills

    We would be happy to talk to you about study skills, such as planning or study methods. Here you will find various study tips and a link to the VU's training offerings. 

  • Inappropriate behaviour

    Don't keep it to yourself if you have experienced inappropriate behaviour. Make sure to get in touch, even if you feel that there is no immediate solution to your situation. Conversations with the academic advisors are confidential, and any follow-up steps will only be taken after you give your consent.
