How do you choose the programme that suits you best?
Choosing a study programme is not always easy. Unfortunately, every academic year, students discover that they have selected a study programme that is not right for them. But, not to worry! You can minimise the chance that this will happen to you by learning everything you can about your options and participating in information activities. You can do so by following one (or all) of these activities:
- Follow our 7-step plan for choosing the right study programme
As a university, we have a pretty good idea of how prospective students can make a well-informed choice about how to choose a programme that suits you. We have put this into a handy step-by-step plan for you.
Are you in doubt about your chosen study programme, and are you thinking about switching? Then follow our Study Switch Action Plan (only for Bachelor's students).
- Visit a Bachelor’s Day or Master's Day
The Bachelor’s Day and (online) Master's Day are open days where everything is focused on helping you choose a study programme. You can learn all about the degree programmes at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Ask all your questions at the various information markets and get to know our teachers, students and academic advisors. Our International Office is available to answer all your questions regarding admission, studying in the Netherlands, housing, and visa matters.
During the information rounds, workshops and lectures, you will get an impression of your favourite programmes.
- Become a Student for a Day!
You have two options: you can come and try out the programme (a Taster Day) or follow a VU student for a day. If you choose to join a Taster Day, the study programme will create a special itinerary for you, allowing you to gain a good impression of the programme. If you choose to tag along with a student for a day (or part of a day), you will follow him or her around campus. You will usually attend a lecture and a seminar and get to know the campus.
Some programmes are organising their activities online. Participating in one of these activities will give you a more complete impression of the study programme and the students. This will help you determine whether the study programme matches your interests and abilities.
Do you want to get more information about the Taster Day or the Student for a Day activities? Check out the Taster Day and Student for a Day website for Bachelor's or the Student for a Day website for Master's.
- Get in contact with our International Office and our VU Ambassadors
Every degree programme has its own International Student Advisor (ISA). If you are applying for one of our English-taught programmes, you can contact the ISA directly for any questions related to the study programme, admission requirements, the application procedure, studying in the Netherlands and more.
Do you have a question for a current student? Ask one of our VU Ambassadors.
VU Amsterdam is represented abroad by a number of cultural institutions and education recruitment agents. Check the details.
