Help your students choose a study programme: nine tips!

As a counsellor, you play an important role in providing your students with information about university study programmes. These eight tips will help you fulfil this role even better.

Whatever phase of the selection process your students are in, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is always happy to provide information or a suitable activity to help them make their decision. Discover what VU Amsterdam offers in cooperation with secondary schools.

  1. The VU Experience (international)
    • We understand that the idea of studying abroad, far away from family and friends, can be daunting for graduating high school students. This is why we started the VU Experience. The goal of the VU Experience is to show counsellors and students that studying abroad is actually a thrilling experience, leading to self-development, self-confidence and academic achievements.
    • The VU Experience is a unique way for counsellors to get a peek into the life of a VU Amsterdam student, while at the same time receiving all relevant information regarding admission.
  2. Support for information meetings
VU Amsterdam is happy to support the organisation of information meetings for your students. This could include:
    • a presentation at your school about our Bachelor’s programmes and studying at VU Amsterdam, including tips for choosing the right study programme and an explanation of selection and matching for VU Bachelor's programmes
    • the organisation of a visit to the university
    • an information table at your information market
    • an online information session
    • If you are interested in one or more activities for the upcoming school year, please let us know via international@vu.nl (International schools in the Netherlands and schools located abroad) or scholen.mc@vu.nl (Dutch schools).
  3. International Office Advice (international)
The International Student Advisors (ISA) of the International Office are here to help with any questions regarding the application procedure, admission requirements, and any other information related to studying at VU Amsterdam as an international student.
  4. Bachelor's Open Day
You can point students to a VU Bachelor’s Day during their study selection process. The Bachelor’s Day gives them the opportunity to meet students, teachers and academic advisors during the information market. They can also get information about the application process, money matters, living in the Netherlands and Amsterdam, and studying abroad.
  5. Taster Day
During a Taster Day or Student for a Day at VU Amsterdam, students spend a day or part of a day as a guest at the study programme(s) of their choice. This gives them a more complete picture of the programme(s) and contributes to their general impression of the university, its teachers and students.
  6. VU Study Choice Check
    • The application process includes a check to assess whether the programme is really suitable for your students. They can do so with VU Study Choice Check, which consists of a mandatory questionnaire in VUnet and (for most degree programmes) an online activity to which students will be invited via email.
    • Most Bachelor's degree programmes have adopted VU Study Choice Check. Apply for a Bachelor's degree programme with VU Study Choice Check before 1 May, and before 1 April for non-EU/EEA students.
  7. Stay up-to-date with the counsellor newsletter
    • The latest news on educational developments, VU study programmes and VU Amsterdam, in general, can be found in our newsletters for counsellors, mentors and secondary school teachers. The newsletter provides interesting articles to read that can also be easily shared with colleagues.
    • Sign up for our international counsellor newsletter by sending an email to international@vu.nl. Would you like to receive the Dutch newsletter Wisselwerk? Send an email to wisselwerk@vu.nl.
  8. Pre-University College (Dutch)
    • The Pre-University College is a joint venture between VU Amsterdam and 52 secondary schools in the greater Amsterdam region. It offers challenging programmes to Dutch VWO students (grades 3 to 6) that develop their talents and prepare them for university studies.
    • Students are introduced to science through master classes in which they conduct their own research and present the results of this research. Some examples of master classes are 'Living in a virtual reality', 'Graphic Medicine' and 'You can learn how to motivate!'. This is a valuable experience that will help them make the right choice of study programme later on.
    • Take a look at the programmes of the Pre-University College (in Dutch).
