Studying English Literature

Are you studying for a Bachelor's degree in Language and Mind (a specialisation within CIW) at VU Amsterdam and are you considering becoming an English teacher? You can start exploring teaching opportunities during your Bachelor's programme!

The so-called Schoolvakminor English Literature will broaden your knowledge of the field of English.

After completing a one-year Master's programme in English, you can subsequently enroll in the one-year Master's programme  Leraar Voorbereidend Hoger Onderwijs in de Taal- en Cultuurwetenschappen: Engels.

In combination with your Bachelor's programme, this minor lays the foundation for what a starting English teacher needs to know and be able to do in terms of English literature.

After completing this minor, you can also take an educatieve module before you start your Master's programme, i.e. immediately after your Bachelor's. This will give you a limited teaching qualification and allows you to start working in secondary education!

Please note: from September 2027, it will no longer be possible to enrol in the two-year Master's programme Master Educatie in de Taal- en Cultuurwetenschappen.

Change your world, take the minor English Literature
