Kick-start your professional career with the pre-master's programme SBI

Science, Business and Innovation (pre-master's programme)

Are you interested in a master’s SBI at VU Amsterdam, but find that your previous education does not meet the admission requirements?

Then do the pre-master's programme Science, Business and Innovation.

Please note: if you obtained your Bachelor's degree abroad, and are thus an international applicant, you cannot apply to the pre-master's directly. You always have to first apply to the relevant Master's programme, after which the admissions board can decide whether a pre-master's programme is a suitable option.

Admission requirements and application

  • Rules for admission into the pre-master's programme

    Pre-master's programme SBI 
    Students from science-based university Bachelor programs can enroll for the Master SBI, after completing a pre-master's programme (30 ECTS). A pre-master's programme is also conditional for students with a (professional) Bachelor’s degree in Physics or Chemistry.

    Pre-master's programme International students
    This information is for students with previous education outside of the Netherlands. You do not apply directly for pre-master's. If you are interested in programme SBI you are invited to apply. SBI admission board will decide if you are eligible for the master programme or suggest the pre-master's programme.

    Language Requirements

    To enter the pre-master's programme, an English Language Test is required for international students. This requirement can be met if no longer than two years before the start of the programme the applicant has successfully completed one of the following examinations with the minimum scores indicated:
    -    IELTS (Academic): 6.5
    -    TOEFL paper based test: 580
    -    TOEFL internet based test: 92
    -    VU TOEFL ITP: 580
    -    Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): A, B, C
    -    Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): A, B, C

    Exceptions are made for students who:
    -    have obtained a Dutch VWO diploma including English, or an International Baccalaureate or European Baccalaureate diploma
    -    have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a Dutch university,
    -    have completed previous education in Canada, Ireland, UK, USA, Australia or New Zealand.

    Note that TOEFL MyBestScore is not accepted. Our institution code is 7947.

    Your English test results can be included in your application file or sent to the following email address (for non-Dutch degree holders): masters.fs@vu.nl

    N.B. We do not require a pre-master's assessment.

  • Application

    You can find all general information about applying for a pre-master's programme here.

    The application deadlines are:

    • 1 February for international students applying for one of the VU scholarships
    • 1 April for non-EU/EEA students*
    • 1 June for non-Dutch EU/EEA students
    • 1 June for holders of a Dutch bachelor’s degree (with a Dutch or EU/EEA nationality)

    *non-EU/EEA students who do not need a study visa and/or a residence permit can still apply until 1 June.

    Your application will be rejected in case you didn’t upload the required documents in ‘your dashboard’ within 6 weeks after your enrolment in Studielink, or in case you’ve uploaded (one or more) of the required documents after June 1st. Applications and documents submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
