This research master offers you a challenging program!

The master Personalized Medicine is a two-year international research master program of 120 ECTS. The program aims to train (bio)-medically oriented bachelors and related bachelors in Life Sciences to become independent researchers with in-depth knowledge on different aspects of clinical and translational research, imaging and personalized medicine. The start date of this master program is September 1st.

If so, this program was made for you!

This program is taught within Amsterdam UMC, mainly at location VUmc. In the first year, you learn all about the different aspects of clinical and translational research, medical imaging and personalized medicine necessary to set up and carry out scientific research. After finishing the first four compulsory courses, you can specialize yourself in the direction of medical imaging or technological development (two specialized courses). In the second year, you will be able to focus on what interests you and what the subject of your major internship will be. You have a high degree of freedom to choose among several specialized optional master courses and a number of outstanding research groups for research projects. The program coordinator advises you during your career development and helps you to set-out a tailor-made program of your interests.

Year 1

The Imaging and Personalized Medicine Track at the VU focuses on different aspects of clinical research, imaging and personalized medicine necessary to set up and carry out scientific research. In addition to knowledge about different research methods and the use of measuring instruments, the most important statistical techniques needed for data analysis and biobusiness are discussed. This is part of the first four compulsory courses which are: 

  • Personalized Medicine (6EC)
  • Data Science & Bioinformatics (6EC)
  • Basics of Clinical Research and Regulations (6EC)
  • Imaging Principles (6EC)

After finishing these first four courses, you continue with a specialization that consists of 2 additional courses. The specializations are:

  • Medical Imaging (2 x 6EC)
  • Technological Development (2x 6EC)

The courses are followed by your minor internship.

Year 2

During the second year of the programme, you start with the compulsory course "Partners in Innovation".
Afterwards, you can shape your own programme. You will follow optional courses of your own choice. The optional courses organised by the Faculty of Medicine VU Amsterdam are listed below but is also possible to follow courses at other faculties or another university.
In addition, you have to write a literature study and do your major internship. It is possible to go abroad.

On completing this master’s programme, you will be a young scientist in the field of Personalized Medicine.

As a graduate, the next step in your career might be a PhD position to become the next top scientist in the field of Personalized Medicine or another research area of your choice in clinical life sciences. Other possibilities are jobs in large pharmaceutical or biotech companies, double degrees as a medical doctor or training as a teacher. Five years after the start of the program, approximately 90% of all the students have a job within or outside academia.
