Ready to tackle global legal issues and human rights?

Law: International Migration and Refugee Law

Your future in migration law starts here

If you successfully complete the International Migration and Refugee Law track, you may use the title Master of Laws (LLM). In the Netherlands, you are also entitled to use the Dutch title meester in de rechten (mr.).

Upon completing this Master’s, you will have a solid understanding of international migration and refugee policy, as well as the complex relationship between international, European and national legal systems.

Versatile career opportunities after graduation

A Master’s in International Migration and Refugee Law from VU Amsterdam opens pathways to a wide range of career opportunities in law, policy, advocacy, and research.

Graduates work in:

Immigration and asylum law firms - representing migrants and refugees in legal proceedings.
Legal aid organisations - providing support for asylum seekers and undocumented migrants
International organisations - such as UNHCR, IOM, OHCHR, EASO, and the European Commission.
National governments - working in ministries, immigration services, and asylum agencies.
The judiciary and courts - as clerks or judicial assistants specialising in migration law.
NGOs and advocacy groups - supporting migrants’ rights and shaping migration policies.
Humanitarian organisations - coordinating refugee assistance and protection programmes.
Academic and research institutions - conducting legal studies on migration and human rights.
Think tanks and policy institutes - advising on migration governance and international law.

Career opportunities beyond migration law

Because migration law is complex and closely connected to international law, the programme is also suitable for careers beyond migration law. You can therefore work in organisations where you deal with the principles and impact of international and European law on a daily basis.

Scholarships
