Boost your GIS career and make your data work for you

Geographical Information Sciences (UNIGIS)

It’s likely that you have had quite a bit of contact with data in your work already. But after completing the Master’s in GIS at VU Amsterdam, you will be able to get much more out of those data. You’ll uncover patterns and relationships that you otherwise might not have known were there, and your broadened view will help you make more targeted moves.
  • Your presentations and communications will be clear and convincing because you can illustrate your analysis with bold, impressive maps and info graphics that show the patterns, correlations and insights that have led to your decisions. You’ll have the skills to perform the analyses that will lead to targeted and effective reasoning and planning.
  • You will transition from simply managing and absorbing data to being able to master it. From recognizing the correlation between data sets to communicating how those correlations impact the work you do every day. And you’ll work with the latest methods, technology and tools to prepare you for the challenges of today, and the opportunities of tomorrow.
  • In short, you will become more effective at your tasks, more capable of convincing others of your decisions, and more prepared for future developments in your career.
  • As part of the global UNIGIS network, the GIS Master’s at VU Amsterdam is one of only two of its kind in all of Europe. Our membership in UNIGIS International offers you the opportunity to take online courses from other UNIGIS universities.

Geo-ICT Training Center: Advancing your GIS expertise

Geo-ICT Training Center is a proud partner of the UNIGIS program at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). Through this collaboration, students can expand their expertise in Geographic Information Science (GIS) after completing their UNIGIS Master’s degree.

About Geo-ICT
Located in the Netherlands, the Geo-ICT Training Center offers a range of training programs focused on GIS, GeoAI, and other geo-information applications. These programs are available in four flexible formats:

  1. Courses: Delivered in a classroom (or online) setting, these instructor-led courses encourage interactive learning with peers. Course lengths range from 1 to 4 days.
  2. Blended Learning: Combining self-study with scheduled interactive sessions, this format allows you to engage with an instructor for guidance and questions.
  3. MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses): Self-paced courses that allow you to learn independently without instructor interaction.
  4. Online Support: In addition to the main study formats, one-on-one sessions with a specialist are available to address specific questions or challenges.

With these options, you can choose a learning style that best aligns with your needs and schedule.

 Post-Master’s Opportunities

Upon completing the UNIGIS Master’s program, students may pursue advanced courses offered by Geo-ICT to further their GIS knowledge and practical skills, ensuring they remain at the cutting edge of the field.

Traineeship Opportunities

Graduates also have the chance to undertake fully paid traineeships, which include job-specific training and immediate placement with a client in roles such as:

  • CAD Engineer
  • Data Analyst, Data Scientist, or Data Engineer
  • GIS Specialist
  • Fiber Optic Network Engineer

…and many more exciting career paths within Geographical Information Science!

“I improved my confidence and built new skills.”

The GIS Master’s programme at VU Amsterdam was an excellent opportunity to improve my competence and build new skills in the field of Geoinformation Systems. The study’s flexibility allowed me to gain knowledge in up-to-date technology while having a busy family life as well.

I have acquired new knowledge on spatial analysis and data visualization that I hope will support my career change.

What can you do after your Master's degree?

Start working

Whatever field or sector you work in, the skills you learn during the programme will help you become a more valuable member of your professional community.

If you want to work as a Data Management or Information Specialist, and you’ve mastered the basics, you can spend more time developing and expanding your skills in this rapidly evolving field. Managing real-time data from sensors, working with the software needed to create the latest modelling, learning methods and technology to create dashboards – it’s all within your reach during the programme.

If your role is on the side of analysis or consultancy, you will broaden your skills and develop a few new ones. You’ll help teams develop innovative answers to the challenge’s organisations face, today and in the future. You will apply geospatial analysis and visualisation and support effective collaboration among different stakeholders by adopting techniques that make solutions visual, tangible and attainable.
