Your Stepping Stone for an Academic Career

Research Master in Economics (Tinbergen Institute)

The TI research master programme in economics is the best way to start an academic career in economics, econometrics or finance

In the first year, students receive rigorous training in the core subjects and tools of economics, econometrics and finance. In the second year, students specialize in their choice of the institute’s many research areas through field coursework and research master's thesis research.

Jumpstart for PhD trajectory!

Students who perform well in the research master's program usually continue in the three-year PhD program. Students in the PhD program typically spend most or all of their time on research. More detailed information can be found in the study guide.

Detailed information on the study programme and all courses can be found here.

TI Lectures

TI organizes annual Lectures in economics and econometrics where a world-class scholar teaches an intensive advanced small scale course on a topic that appeals to many of the institute’s students and fellows. Past lectures were taught by: Christopher Sims, Trevor Hastie, James A. Robinson, Guido W. Imbens, Pascaline Dupas, Serena Ng, Fatih Guvenen and Benjamin Moll to name a few. Lectures are listed here

Students receive a lot in return from the Tinbergen Institute

What does Tinbergen Institute offer to students?

A Cooperative Small-Scale International Student Body

A max. of 30 students from all over the globe are admitted annually. This allows the program to foster and nurture a learning environment in which cooperation dominates competition =. Students form a closely knit group, also with students from our partner program, Business Data Science.

Tinbergen Institute runs its own merit-based scholarship programme: over the years, TI financially supported some 50% of the students in the 1st year. Percentages are even higher for second year students. PhD students have an employment contract and a full salary.

TI Research Master Programme accredited

The Research Master programme in Economics of the Tinbergen Institute is accredited by NVAO (Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie), the accreditation organization of the Netherlands and Flanders.

NVAO is entrusted by law to accredit all existing bachelor’s and master’s degree courses and to validate new study programmes at government-funded higher education institutions as well as institutions approved (but not funded) by the Dutch government.
