  • I have a Dutch university level (WO) Bachelor’s degree (VU Bachelor’s degree, VU premaster or Bachelor’s degree at another university)

    The Master’s in Chemistry is open to students:  

    • with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry  
    • with a Bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences  
    • with a Bachelor's degree from a relevant Dutch hbo programme

    General language proficiency requirements 

    VU Amsterdam requires all applicants to take an English test and to submit their score as a part of the application. Exceptions are made for students who have completed their education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia or who have obtained an international Baccalaureate or European Baccalaureate diploma.

    All students must first have an intake interview with the Master coordinator. Please contact the master coordinator of your specialisation.

  • I have a Dutch higher vocational education (HBO) Bachelor’s degree (premaster)

    Generally, candidates with a Bachelor's degree from a (Dutch) university of applied sciences (HBO) can be admitted to the MSc Chemistry only after completion of a pre-Master's programme ("schakelprogramma").

    This pre-Master's programme of max. 30 EC is offered in the first semester. After successful completion, admission to the MSc Chemistry will be granted by 1 February. The Examination Board decides on the content of the pre-Master's programme for a candidate. The standard programme (30 EC) for all tracks is shown in the table below.

    If you want to apply for a Master's programme at VU Amsterdam, the application procedure depends on your previous degree(s) and whether you obtained your diploma in the Netherlands or abroad. You find all information about the application procedure with a Dutch degree on the application page. International students (non-Dutch degree) are required to apply with our joint degree partner, the University of Amsterdam.     The application deadlines are:

    To start in September

    • 1 February for international students applying for one of the VU scholarships 
    • 1 April for non-EU/EEA students
    • 30 June for Dutch and EU/EEA students

    To start in February 

    • 1 November for non-EU/EEA students
    • 1 December for Dutch and EU/EEA students

  • I have an international degree

    The Chemistry programme is open to both Dutch and international students. The Faculty’s Admission Board will decide upon your admission after having evaluated your complete online application.

    In order to gain admission to the Chemistry Master’s programme, you will need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent. We do not require a GRE or GMAT test score. A Bachelor's degree obtained at an applied university or higher vocational education (HBO in Dutch) in most cases does not grant direct access to the programme (only exceptionally high ranking students stand a chance of admission).
