Transform our food systems to create a more sustainable world

Sem01 (2024-2025) From Plate to Planet - Crafting Sustainable Food Systems

This course focuses on the state and diversity of current food systems, their social-ecological impacts and the urgent need for transforming our food systems. What impact does the production of my food have on the environment? Are the workers involved in producing my food treated fairly? How does my dietary choices affect biodiversity and ecosystem health? How can I advocate for policies and practices that promote a more sustainable food system? In this course, we will focus on comprehending the functioning of food systems and on how to contribute to the transformation towards more sustainable food systems.

The course will introduce a range of concepts and theories relevant to Sustainable Food Systems that originate from a wide range of disciplines an that are tightly linked to applied research that is currently conducted at the VU. The fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, encouraging students to analyze real-world issues and apply scientific knowledge to develop practical solutions.

On the scientific front, the course introduces cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and theories shaping the future of current food systems. From a social perspective, the course enables students to grasp the profound impact of food systems on communities, cultures, and social equity. Understanding these dynamics is essential for devising policies and interventions that promote sustainable and inclusive food systems, contributing to the overall well-being of societies.
