Summer in Amsterdam
Experience Amsterdam like a local during VU Amsterdam Summer School. Beyond the academic, immerse yourself in the city's vibrant culture, iconic landmarks, and hidden gems. Learn about Dutch history, art, and design, and immerse yourself in the local language and customs. Our programs offer a unique opportunity to discover life in the Netherlands.
Amsterdam is also a fantastically connected city. Traveling to and from other European capitals is easy with a frequent and fast international train service. Fancy Berlin in just over 6 hours? Or perhaps Paris in only three. If you're feeling more adventurous, an overnight train delivers you straight to the heart of the Alps in Innsbruck, Austria, for a spot of summer hiking. The rest of Europe is on your doorstep if you're staying in Amsterdam.
July is also one of the best times of year to experience the Dutch capital. Locals celebrate summer months with outdoor activities such as lake swimming, long cycle rides, and sports in the park. Most parks also have public barbeque spaces that can be used free of charge. Bars and cafes open until late in the evening when the city really comes to life.
Not to mention Amsterdam Pride, the celebration of equality and freedom that takes over the city during the first weekend of August! It is one of the largest (and most fun) publicly held annual events in the Netherlands and the perfect way to end your summer school experience.
