Social programme

Join our social activities!

Additional to the courses, we offer exiting social activities to make sure you have a spectacular summer school experience! Make sure to join our social programme to meet fellow students from all over the world.

A pick-up service from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, an informal welcome and closing event is included in the tuition fee. But we also offer additional optional activities to discover Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Dutch culture. Continue reading to find out what social activities we organise for you!

A link to register for the social programme has been shared with the participants. The social programme will be based on a first-come-first-serve basis (the earliest you apply and pay for your course, the earlier you can select your social activities). 

Session one (2 - 16 July)

  • Arrival weekend

    Arrival weekend | Saturday 2 July

    Arrival day
    On Saturday 2 July 2022, we will welcome you at Schiphol Airport (in Amsterdam) where our staff will be waiting to greet you and we will also offer a pick-up service to bring you to one of our accommodation options. This will take place from 09.00-15.00 CET. 

    Welcome event
    On Saturday afternoon (17:00), we kindly invite you to our Welcome event where you can meet your fellow summer school participants staying in/near the same accommodation. This will take place at Hotel Jansen and Via Hostel Diemen.  

    Sunday 3 July

    Start your day off with mindful yoga, or get energy from a Kickboxing or Zumba class together with fellow summer school students! You can participate in one class at VU Sportcentre Uilenstede, for free!

    • 10:15 - 11:15 Yoga
    • 15:00 - 16:00 Kickboxing
    • 16:00 - 17:00 Zumba

    *The airport pick-up, Welcome event and sports day are free of charge! Registration is required. A link to the sign up form will be shared with the summer school participants. 

  • Summer school kick-off

    Summer school kick-off | Monday 4 July

    Morning kick-off and campus tour 
    First day of summer school! On this day we will officially open VU Amsterdam Summer School 2022 with all students and staff members. There will be a welcome plenary and a campus tour, so that you can find your way around easily in the upcoming weeks. 

    Afternoon pub quiz
    That same Monday in the afternoon, we will have a pub quiz to celebrate the beginning of the summer school and where you can get to know your summer school peers.

  • Discover Amsterdam

    Discover Amsterdam | Wednesday 6 July

    On Wednesday afternoon you can choose from four thrilling activities in Amsterdam. Join us for:

    • Stand up paddling through the canals and clean-up
    • An underground tour through the city by a former homeless person
    • Boat Tour Rederij Lampedusa by former refugees
    • Bike Tour through Waterland area (Amsterdam North) 

    *Additional costs, not included in the tuition fee. 

  • Discover the Netherlands

    Discover the Netherlands | Saturday 9 July

    Join us for a day out of Amsterdam and discover what more the Netherlands has to offer! You can choose from the three following day trips:

    Bike trip to Cheese and clog farm Clara Maria - morning programme*
    Cheeselovers unite! In the morning we will cycle through the Forest of Amsterdam to a Cheesefarm. Here we will see how Dutch farmers cheese is made, will have a tasting session and even make our own cheese! 

    The Hague - full day trip*
    On Saturday we will visit the city of The Hague: the political heart of the Netherlands, home to stunning palaces and museums and so much more! We will leave early afternoon and be back in the evening. For this trip we offer different activities you can join: 

    • A guided walking tour through The Hague
    • An evening sunset barbecue dinner at the beach in Scheveningen where you can relax and enjoy the food and views.  

    There will be time for you to explore the city at your own pace in between activities before we all meet with everyone again at the beach. The cost of the trip include transport there and back, dinner and the tours. 

    National Park Veluwe and Kröller-Müller Art Museum - full day trip*
    The Netherlands might not be famous for its wildlife, but we do have stunning national parks around the country. We will visit one of these parks where we will have lunch and cycle around the beautiful heathered and sandy fields. In addition, we will visit the museum inside the park: the Kröller-Müller museum which has the second largest collection of paintings from Van Gogh, but also pieces painted by Monet, Seurat, Picasso and Mondriaan, and a garden full of interesting modern sculptures. All pieces and sculptures were privately collected by the Kröller-Müller couple between 1907 and 1922. All in all, it will be a unique experience combining nature, architecture and art. 

    We will leave in the morning and be back in the late afternoon. Costs are including the transport there and back, lunch, entrance to the park, museum and museum garden.

  • VUture at VU Amsterdam

    VUture at VU Amsterdam | Thursday 7 July

    Would you like to know more about following a Bachelor or Master programme at VU Amsterdam or are you interested in PhD possibilities? Join this information session! 

    *This information session is free of charge. More information will be shared with summer school participants in July. 

  • Afternoon in the museum

    Afternoon in the museum | Wednesday 13 July

    Join us for an afternoon in the museum. You can choose from:

    Grachtenmuseum (Museum of the Canals)*
    Learn all about Amsterdam's canals and their impact both in the past and in the present of the city. At the Grachtenmuseum you will enter a 17th-century, double canal house with classic period rooms and will take a guided tour. 

    Anne Frank House visit and Introduction*
    Visiting the Anne Frank House is a must for those who come to Amsterdam. The museum tells the story of the renowned Anne Frank through quotes, photos, videos, and original items. You will be able to see the inside of the walls where the Frank family went into hiding in 1942. This visit with VU Amsterdam Summer School includes an exclusive introduction by a museum guide. 

    Rembrandt house (tour)*
    Are you interested in art? If so, you cannot miss out on visiting Rembrandt's house. We will have a guided tour and after that you will have time to explore the museum by yourself. 

    *Registration is possible for one museum only, all museums have additional costs, not included in the tuition fee. Registration link will be shared with summer school participants.

  • Closing event

    • Closing event to those that join a two-week course in session one: Friday 15 July

    Your summer school has already come to an end! Let's gather for one last time during the goodbye celebratory drinks!

    After an intense two-week summer course, what better way to wrap up such an experience than by joining your peers and new friends for a one last goodbye event. 

    *The closing event is free of charge! Registration is required. A link to the sign up form will be shared with the summer school participants.

    Discover the Netherlands | Saturday 23 July

    Join us for a day out of Amsterdam and discover what more the Netherlands has to offer! You can choose from the three following day trips:

    Day trip to Rotterdam*
    Join us for a day trip to the second biggest city of the Netherlands: Rotterdam. Rotterdam an architecture city with unique skyscrapers and a beautiful skyline. During this day trip we will also learn more about the Port of Rotterdam, as Rotterdam has the largest seaport in Europe.

    Included in the Rotterdam trip:

    • Walking tour through the city
    • Boat tour through the habour 
    • Free time to explore!

    Day trip to Haarlem*

    Haarlem, the capital of the province of North Holland and also the home of Bianca (summer school team member). With an abundance of historical sights, cultural attractions and hidden gems crammed into a relatively small city, a visit to Haarlem makes for a brilliant day trip from Amsterdam.

    On this day you can choose between (first come first serve ):

    • Molen de Adriaan: one group has the chance to visit De Adriaan windmill, a smock mill charmingly located in the city center on the bank of the river Spaarne. A guide will tell us all about the age-old technique of converting wind into productive energy. You will also learn more about windmills in general, and about the Adriaan in particular.
    • Teylers museum: one group has the chance to visit Teylers Museum.The museum is the best-preserved 18th-century public knowledge institution for the arts and sciences in the world. It has been open to the public since 1784, welcoming all those who are eager to look at objects of interest in the visual arts and the sciences. It is a unique place with a remarkable atmosphere, and a visit is bound to be an unforgettable experience.

    After the windmil/museum visit we will gather all together and go for lunch (included in the fee). After lunch - we will go on a boats through the canals of Haarlem. Afterwards you have the chance to stay in Haarlem, go to the beach, a free festival that is happening that weekend or return to Amsterdam.

  • VUture at VU Amsterdam

  • Afternoon in the museum

    Afternoon in the museum | Wednesday 27 July

    Join us for an afternoon in the museum. You can choose from:

    Van Gogh Museum and Tour*
    Visit this world's breathtaking museum. The museum exists for more that two hundred and is in possession of many masterpiece paintings of Dutch and world art. Along the masterworks like Rembrandt’s “Night watch”, several paintings by Vermeer, van Dyck and Jan Steen, the museum has truly exceptional collection of the antique objects of the material Dutch culture, vast collection of prints, drawings and the classic photography. 

    Anne Frank House visit and Introduction*

Are you ready to step into the house of one of the world’s most famous writers? 

    Rijksmuseum (tour)*
    Are you interested in art? If so, you cannot miss out on visiting Amsterdam’s biggest museum that houses works such as the Milkmaid, the Night Watch, the Asian Temple Guards and Breitner. During this visit you will be lead around the museum by an expert guide who will not only show you the highlights and well-known masterpieces but will also answer your questions.
