Choose your communication programme at VU Amsterdam

Learn how to adapt your communication for different target groups

How do you explain the instructions for conducting a self-test? Why would you choose an animated video rather than a podcast to encourage civic participation? Find out which programmes at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam you can take if you want to study communication.

You communicate all day long, both consciously and subconsciously. You use WhatsApp, social media, other apps and QR codes. You follow the Grand Prix and the Olympic Games live, right from your phone. And you discuss fashion, make-up or football on TikTok or Instagram. As a communications expert, how do you ensure that the right message is communicated through the right channel? What tone of voice would work best, for instance, for an SEO strategy? How can you ensure that you connect with the audience? Which medium should you choose to get an idea across or to influence, encourage or inspire people to act? If you choose to study communication at VU Amsterdam, you will study the communications of a wide range of organisations and learn how to create communication plans and campaigns.

You can focus on for-profit or non-profit organisations, B2B or B2C, specific target groups, or on internal vs. external communication. You will learn to look at a brand strategically and understand how that brand can be more meaningful. In every situation you analyse, you will look at your target group, the medium and the intended outcome with a fresh perspective and will write new creative stories and communication plans.

If you choose communication, you will learn what an organisation wants to communicate to the outside world by asking the right questions. You will look at change processes and issues with teamwork and you will figure out how people collaborate and what can be improved. Whether it concerns people or organisations, communication is key. Learning about communication helps you understand the power of storytelling and the value of a story that is well told and well written.
