Discover the secrets workings of our memory

Find out which programmes at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam you can take to learn more about memory.

Does the word 'memory' immediately cause your forehead to wrinkle? Does it make you think of memorising facts, mnemonics, your exams or that blackout you had one time? Does it remind you of the computer that was the first to outsmart a professional chess player? Or does a classmate who never returned to their ‘old self' after an accident pop into your head? If you want to study memory, you can choose from a variety of programmes at VU Amsterdam.

You could study memory from a medical and psychological perspective, for example. You would then look at possible causes of behavioural change and how someone can be helped. You will be able to see imagery of what happens in the brain when you experience certain emotions, and see in which part of the brain you experience feelings like love, pleasure, hunger and fear. Or you could zoom in further and study the processes that take place in the body in great detail. You can also look at what happens in your brain when you drink, eat or take medicines. Or you can see what effects exercise, outdoor air and stress have the brain.

And we have not even covered the enormous potential of artificial intelligence yet. It may well be that one of your teammates at VU Amsterdam, with whom you will soon be doing research, is not a human being but a computer. Cool, huh?

And last but not least, let's not forget that every city, village and location also has its own memories. What does a building or a certain architectural style say about the period in which it was built? Everything, right? That is a whole different way of studying memory. Every day, a piece of the puzzle is put in place and you can learn more about the brain. But we still don't know everything! Our memory is super cool, but it also fails us sometimes. At VU Amsterdam, you can explore practically every avenue to gain a deeper understanding of memory.
